CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

What is online education?

Computer-based training, Web-based training, Internet based training, online training,
e-learning (electronic learning), m-learning (mobile learning), computeraided distance
education - online education goes by many names and comes in a variety of styles,
but at its core

From this simple definition comes an almost infinite number of ways to teach and
learn outside of traditional classrooms and away from college campuses. With online
education, students can turn anywhere with Internet access and electricity into a
classroom. It can include audio, video, text, animations, virtual training environments
and live chats with professors. It’s a rich learning environment with much more
flexibility than a traditional classroom

When used to its full potential, online education has been shown to be more effective
than pure face-to-face instruction. It can be engaging, fun and tailored to fit almost
anyone’s schedule

7
Online Education Programs

• 100% Online Education - Fully-online degrees are earned from the comfort of
your own home with no required visits to your college or university campus.
• Hybrid Education - Hybrid education allows students to pursue a combination
of online and on-campus courses.
• Online Courses - While online courses may be part of a degree program,
they can also be taken on their own in order to master a certain subject or
learn a specific skill.
• MOOCs - MOOCs, or massive open online courses, are usually delivered in
lecture form to online "classrooms" with as many as 10,000 people.

It's not easier studying online! Online institutions must meet with the same quality
requirements as brick-and-mortar institutions. With the advancement of online
learning technologies, virtual institutions have enhanced automated processes to
deter fraud and/or plagiarism.

Many online institutions will partner with universities on campus to develop and
deliver online programs. This enables an online service, while providing validated
course studies through the brick-and-mortar institution, to benefit from the advanced
expertise and technology that an online provider provides

8
HOW IT WORKS?

In years past, instructors had to create their “virtual classrooms” from scratch
which was difficult and often led to poor results. Today, an entire industry has
emerged to do this for us. Course Management System (CMS) software is
utilized by just about all colleges today. CMS allow instructors to design and
deliver their courses within a flexible framework that includes a number of
different tools to enable learning and communication to occur.

Popular for-profit CMS include:

• Blackboard (www.blackboard.com)

• Web CT (www.webct.com)

• e College (www.ecollege.com) Low cost alternative and open source CMS include:

• ETUDES-NG (http://etudesproject.org)

• Moodle (http://moodle.org)

• Angel (http://angellearning.com) Any of these CMS offer functionality which allows

instructors to deliver course content, enable communications, and conduct
evaluations. The most common tools offered by CMS include:

9
A New Paradigm for Teaching and Learning

Online learning is catalyzing a pedagogical shift in how we teach and learn.

There is a shift away from top-down lecturing and passive students to a more
interactive, collaborative approach in which students and instructor co-create
the learning process. The Instructor’s role is changing from the “sage on the
stage” to “the guide on the side.”

Constructivism This point of view maintains that people actively construct new
knowledge as they interact with their environment. This is a student-centered
approach in which students “co-create” their Introduction to Online Teaching
and Learning Joshua Stern, Ph.D. 3 learning experience. This approach
empowers students as active learners instead of just passive recipients
absorbing information and reproducing it for standardized tests.

Derived from the work of Swiss philosopher, Jean Piaget, constructivism

emphasizes:

• The learner as a unique individual.

• The relevance of the learner’s background and culture.

• Increased responsibility for learning belongs to the student.

• Motivation for learning comes from successful completion of challenging

tasks.

• Instructors as facilitators helping learners develop their own understanding

of content.

• Learning is an active, social process.

• The dynamic interaction between task, instructor and learner. Synergy!

Constructionism

Constructionism asserts that learning is particularly effective when

constructing something for others to experience. This can be anything from a

10
spoken sentence or an internet posting, to more complex things like a
painting or a presentation. For example, you might read this page several
times and still forget it by tomorrow - but if you were asked to explain these
ideas to someone else in your own words, or produce a slideshow that
explained these concepts, you would gain a deeper understanding that is
more integrated into your own ideas.

Collaboration

As an instructor, you focus on the experiences that would best generate

learning from the learner's point of view, rather than just publishing and
assessing the information you think they need to know. Each participant in a
course can and should be a teacher as well as a learner. Your job changes
from being the sole source of knowledge, to be a guide and role model. You
connect with students in ways that address their own learning needs by
moderating discussions and activities in a way that collectively leads students
towards the larger learning

Online Learning FAQ

Is taking a class online easier than a "regular" class?

Answer: No. The course content in an online class is usually identical to that
of a face-to-face class on the same topic. Some people think the workload is
even more demanding than a regular face-to-face class in that you must be a
self-directed learner, stay motivated, and stay on top of your workload
independently. It has been shown that the most successful online
students/teachers tend to share the following characteristics:

• Self-motivation/self-starter

• Good organization and time-management skills

• Familiar with computers and the Internet

11
• Resourceful and actively seek answers and solutions to questions and
problems

What Internet skills would be helpful in an online class?

Answer: The most successful students have the following Internet skills:

• Familiarity with Web browsers and an email program.

• Some familiarity with Web-based interactions such as email, discussion

boards, listservs, and chat rooms.

• Proficiency with typing and word processing.

• Experience in successful Internet searches using a variety of search

engines.

COMPANY PROFILE

OVERVIEW OF THE COMPANY

Byju’s is an Indian multinational educational technology company, headquartered in Bangalore. It

was founded in 2011 by Byju Raveendran and Divya Gokulnath. As of June 2021, Byju's is
valued at $16.5 billion, making it the most valuable Indian unicorn and the world's most valuable

educational technology company

FIG 1.1

14
HISTORY OF THE COMPANY

Byju's' app was developed by Think and Learn Pvt Ltd, established by Byju
Raveendran and Divya Gokulnath in 2011. Raveendran, who was trained as an
engineer, started coaching students to pass mathematics exams in 2006. In 2011, he
and his wife founded an educational company with the help of his students offering
online video-based learning programs for the K-12 segment as well as competitive
exams. In 2012, Think and Learn entered both Deloitte Technology Fast 50 India and
Deloitte Technology Fast 500 Asia Pacific ratings and has been present there ever
since.

In August 2015, after 4 years of development, the firm launched Byju's: The Learning
App.

In 2017, Think and Learn launched Byju's Math App for kids and Byju's Parent
Connect app to help parents track their child's learning course. By 2018, it had 1.5
crores (15 million) users and 900,000 paid users. In July 2019, Byju's won the
sponsorship rights for the Indian cricket team jersey, replacing its former sponsor
Oppo. Mohanlal and Shah Rukh Khan are the brand ambassadors for Byju.

Byju's subsidiary WhiteHat Jr. was asked to remove their five TV advertisements by
the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) due to misleading advertisements.
WhiteHat Jr. had created a fictional character named "Wolf Gupta" for its social
media advertisements, without disclaiming that he was just a character.

They often claimed his age to be between 6 to 14 years who got job offers worth
crores in multiple posters.

15
About Byju Raveendran,CEO BYJU’S

Byju Raveendran, from Azhikode, a beachfront town in Kerala, was a

designer with a UK-based dispatching organization when he started
helping a couple of companions break the passage test to the IIMs
utilizing his alternate ways. He aced the test himself, scoring 100
percentile, yet didn’t join any of the IIMs.

Beginning with little gatherings of understudies he graduated to

instructing from enormous amphitheatres and arenas, and afterwards by
means of VSAT. He propelled Byju’s-The Learning App in 2015.

Vision and Goals Of Byju’S

Byju Raveendran had a very clear vision regarding the goals of the Business model
of Byju and he certainly worked a lot to achieve those goals successfully.

So, the primary goal of BYJU’s was to remove the gap flaws of the Indian Education
System and to teach the students in such a way that they fall in love with whatever
they study.

Unlike normal teachers and schools, Byju’s delivers it’s study material to the students
in different ways such as quizzes, exercises, and emphasises more on delivering
practical knowledge than just theoretical knowledge.

Byju’s is an unbiased platform that aims to educate everyone instead of focusing only
on the students who are interested and motivated to study they also focus on the
demotivated students equally. They have dedicated and one of the best digital
marketing agency who makes their brand strategy

16
The company aims to create a situation where the students themselves take the
initiative of learning things on their own instead of being spoon-fed just to gain good
scores.

The Business Model of Byju aims at clearing the basic concepts of the students so
they could understand everything they study as this will help them retain that
knowledge for a longer period of time.

Struggles and Challenges

The Business Model Of Byju is incomplete if we do not talk about the challenges,
struggles, and difficulties Byju Raveendran faced before making Byju’s a successful
online studying platform.

Byju’s didn’t start its journey with all the success in its hands, there were huge
difficulties when they were propelling the item in 2015, on the grounds that the
computerized framework was all the while coming to fruition. Today, it is far
predominant.

Plenty of variables were against them in 2015. Paid memberships, as an idea for
versatile installments or satellite TV memberships, or gaining from the screen was
unfathomable.

There wouldn’t have been a business opportunity for an item like Byju’s at that time.
There was no compelling reason to make mindfulness for better learning.

Regardless of whether their learning techniques fluctuate crosswise over business

sectors, there is a solid arrangement among guardians and their youngsters when
guardians see the advantages for them. That is the thing that guardians will pay for.

17
What’s more to it?, After all, the children are eager to learn and this is what is helping
them to quicken their development which has helped Byju’s grow quicker.

The Revenue Model Of Bjyu’s in Detail

BYJU’s pursues a freemium plan of action. For the individuals who don’t know about this
term, this model is an estimating methodology that offers an item for nothing with
additional cash being charged for using highlights of the item.

On a normal, BYJU’s yearly charge for the k-12 application is Rs 10,000. This
application shapes a significant piece of the organization’s income.

Notwithstanding, there are different bundles for disconnected training too. Roughly at
least 80000 is charged for a four-subject bundle. The online course is remembered
for the disconnected model.

As indicated by BYJU, recordings are the greatest wellspring of their headway. These
recordings help them in progressing towards their objective subsequently adding to
effective changes.

The recordings are free for the initial 15 days after which the client needs to pay so
as to proceed with administrations. The effect of their prosperity is checked by two
estimates to be specific drawing in content and the maintenance.

For example, when an understudy invests a significant measure of energy in a

specific video, the worth made will cause a parent to decide on the membership.

The subsequent measure happens when the organization can hold its application client
quite a long time after a year in this manner prompting a restoration of the membership.

As indicated by BYJU, the mystery behind their prosperity is their solid plan of action
which was improved reliably as indicated by the evolving patterns.

The organization apparently uses 20% of its incomes for promoting efforts which give
the organization a generous ROI.

18
This is a decent sum spent on promoting when contrasted with numerous
organizations that simply burn through 5% on their attention.

19
Statistical Byju’s Revenue Growth

FIG 2.2

BYJU’s has shown significant development to the extent income is concerned. The
organization began with a small measure of INR 2 lakhs and it has arrived at 120
crores today.

Income earned by the organization through every one of these years is as per the
following:

2012-4 crore

2013-12 crore

2014-20 crore

2015-48 crore

2016-120 crores

Marketing Analysis of India’s No.1 Edtech Platform: BYJU’S

BYJU’s Target Audience:

Being an edu-tech company, BYJU’s target audience consists of every

student/learner from grade one to students trying to crack entrance exams such as
JEE, CAT, IAS or any other. The best digital marketing company in Delhi NCR
understands that this is a great strategy considering the Indian education industry
which includes over 260 million students in K-12 and more than 35 million students
studying for their higher education.

BYJU’S Marketing Journey

The marketing journey of India’s No 1 Edtech brand has been a rollercoaster with
many successful marketing campaigns gaining a prodigious amount of business for
BYJU’S and even some failed campaigns which have some important learning for
every marketer.

21
Understanding the Target Audience:

It is a real challenge for one marketing campaign to target two really different
audiences of a different age group and thinking process, but BYJU’s surely
managed to find that link which drives decision-making among its audience.
Here is how the company did/does it

Targeting the Student Community:

Being the actual users of the platform, the students are majorly concerned about the
experience they will receive. Hence, their opinion about the app is hugely impacted
by their learning journey with the app.

To earn the support of the learners, BYJU’s left no stones unturned, and targeted this
audience group very smartly. Firstly, the company came up with an early learning app
for the students. Also, partnered with Disney to make the learning experience more
interactive for the kids and created trademark Disney stories, educational games and
digital worksheets which led their path to success amongst the student.

BYJU’s also worked with the King of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan, as their brand
ambassador which attracted this age group to their platform. Their television
advertisements began with their first ad with Shah Rukh Khan that aired during a
India-Pak match and it turned out to be a real success and prompted the audience to
download BYJU’s app

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research is "creative and systematic work undertaken to increase the stock of

knowledge, including knowledge of humans, culture, and society, and the use of this
stock of knowledge to devise new applications."or on the other hand Research is a
process of steps used to collect and analyze information to increase our
understanding of a topic or issue. At a general level, the research consists of three
steps:

1. Pose a question.

2. Collect data to answer the question.

3. Present an answer to the question.

This should be a familiar process. You engage in solving problems every day and you
start with a question, collect some information, and then form an answer.
Research is important for three reasons.

1. The research adds to our knowledge:

Adding to knowledge means that educators undertake research to contribute to the

existing information about issues .

2. Research improves practice:

Research is also important because it suggests improvements for practice. Armed

with research results, teachers and other educators become more effective
professionals.

31
3. Research informs policy debates:

Research also provides information to policymakers when they research and debate
educational topics.

A research project may also be an expansion of past work in the field. Research
projects can be used to develop further knowledge on a topic, or in the example of a
school research project, they can be used to further a student's research progress to
prepare them for future jobs or reports. To test the validity of instruments,
procedures, or experiments, research may replicate elements of prior projects or the
project as a whole. The primary purposes of basic research (as opposed to applied
research) are documentation, discovery, interpretation, or the research and
development (R&D) of methods and systems for the advancement of human
knowledge. Approaches to research depend on epistemologies, which vary
considerably both within and between humanities and sciences. There are several
forms of research: scientific, humanities, artistic, economic, social, business,
marketing, practitioner research, life, technological, etc. The scientific study of
research practices is known as meta-research.

Data collection

Data collection is a standout amongst the most essential stages in carrying on

research. You can have the best research plan in the world , however, in the event
that you can’t gather the necessary data you will not have the capacity to complete
your venture. Data collection is an extremely challenging work that needs exhaustive
planning, diligent work, understanding, determination and more to have the capacity
to complete the assignment effectively. Data collection begins with figuring out what
sort of data is needed, followed by the collection of a sample from a certain section of
the population. Next, you have to utilize a certain tool to gather the data from the
chosen.

Sources of Data Collection

32
Normally we can gather data from two sources namely primary and secondary. Data
gathered through the perception or questionnaire reviews in a characteristic setting
are illustrations of data obtained in an uncontrolled situation. Secondary data is the
data acquired from optional sources like magazines, books, documents, journals,
reports, the web and more. The chart below describes the flow of the sources of data
collection:

FIG 3.1

Sources of Primary Data Collection

Primary data will be the data that you gather particularly with the end goal of your
research venture. The leverage of Primary data is that it is particularly customized to
your analysis needs. A drawback is that it is costly to get hold of. Primary data is
otherwise called raw information; the information gathered from the first source in a
controlled or uncontrolled situation. Cases of a controlled domain are experimental
studies where certain variables are being controlled by the analyst.

The source of primary data is the populace test from which you gather the
information. The initial phase in the process is deciding your target populace. For

33
instance, if you are looking into the attractiveness of another washing machine, your
target populace may be newly-weds.

Clearly, it’s impracticable to gather information from everybody, so you will need to
focus on the sample size and kind of sample. The specimen ought to be arbitrary and
a stratified random sample is frequently sensible. In our washing machine illustration,
subpopulations may incorporate adolescent couples, moderately aged couples, old
couples, and previously wedded couples.

Sources of Secondary Data Collection

You can break the sources of secondary data into internal as well as external
sources. Inner sources incorporate data that exists and is stored in your organization.
External data refers to the data that is gathered by other individuals or associations
from your association’s outer environment. Examples of inner sources of data
incorporate, but are not restricted only to, the following:

✓ Statement of the profit and loss

✓ Balance sheets
✓ Sales figures
✓ Inventory records
✓ Previous marketing studies

If the secondary data you have gathered from internal sources is not sufficient, you
can turn to outside sources of data collection, some outside sources of data
collection include:

✓ Universities
✓ Government sources
✓ Foundations
✓ Media, including telecast, print, and Internet
✓ Trade, business and expert affiliations ✓ Corporate filings

Method used in the project

34
In this project, secondary data is collected as it is economical. It saves efforts and
expenses and is time saving .It helps to make primary data collection more specific
since with the help of secondary data, we are able to make out what are the gaps
and deficiencies and what additional information needs to be collected. It helps to
improve the understanding of the problem. It provides a basis for comparison for the
data that is collected by the researcher

But also, Secondary data is something that seldom fits in the framework of the
marketing research factors. Accuracy of secondary data is not known and Data may
be outdated.

Comparing both the advantages and disadvantages, it was clear that the project has
to be made through the method of secondary data. As convenient as it may sound,
thefirst hand information was tough or nearly impossible to get for the project and
hence, the whole project is based on secondary data.

CHAPTER III

ANALYSIS AND FINDINGS

Byju’s: The Learning App draws the attention of the students by the innovative videos
created. The videos gives a brief description about the topic and mainly tries to focus
on the principal key points. It gives the students an essential introduction and
presents some picture charts with the important information that is to be remembered
by the student. To keep the student in a pace it provides the student with some
questions related to the topic and is able to determine whether the student has
understood the topic well or not and then lets the student move on to the next topic.
At the end of the chapter the app provides a practice section in which the student can
practice numerous question to achieve a mastery in the particular chapter. Whenever
the app feels to have figured out the weak point of the student it repeats the topic that
the student needs to focus on to lose doubt. Moreover, it builds the basic platform for
the student to support the upcoming information that is to be given.

Byju’s: The Learning App provide the student with certain sets of papers for the
competitive exams testing the ability and skills of the student. It provides the scholar
with certain set of questions related to the exam type chosen and counts the time
taken by the student to complete the whole paper. It gives the percentage of
accuracy the student has achieved. It gives the results of average time taken for
each question. To motivate the student it provides few comments like : Good Job,
That was lightning fast! etc. It also provides a list of the topics that the student needs
to focus on.

LIMITATIONS

1. Online student feedback is limited

In traditional classrooms, teachers can give students immediate face-to-face
feedback. Students who are experiencing problems in the curriculum can
resolve them quickly and directly either during the lecture or during the
dedicated office hours. Personalized feedback has a positive impact on
students, as it makes learning processes easier, richer, and more significant,
all the while raising the motivation levels of the students
E-Learning, on the other hand, still tends to struggle with student feedback.
Students completing regular assessments become dissatisfied when they
experience a lack of personalized feedback. The traditional methods of
providing student feedback don’t always work in an E-Learning environment,
and because of this, online education providers are forced to look towards
alternative methods for providing feedback. Providing student feedback in an
online setting is still a relatively unresearched topic area, and it might take a
while for any specific strategies to become fully research-based and proven to
be effective

2. E-Learning can cause social Isolation

The E-Learning methods currently practiced in education tend to make

participating students undergo contemplation, remoteness and a lack of
interaction. As a result, many of the students and teachers who inevitably
spend much of their time online can start experiencing signs of social
isolation, due to the lack of human communication in their lives. Social

41
isolation coupled with a lack of communication often leads to several mental
health issues such as heightened stress, anxiety, and negative thoughts.

4. E-Learning requires strong self-motivation and time

management skills
Lack of self-motivation among students continues to be one of the primary
reasons why students fail to complete online courses. In traditional
classrooms, there are numerous factors which constantly push students
towards their learning goals. Face-to-face communication with professors,
peer-to-peer activities, and strict schedules all work in unison to keep the
students from falling off track during their studies.

4. Lack of communicational s kill development in online students

E-Learning methods are proven to be highly effective at improving the

academic knowledge of the students. However, developing the
communicational skills of the students is an area often neglected during online
lessons. Due to the lack of face-to-face communication between peers,
students and teachers in an online setting, the students might find that they
are unable to work effectively in a team setting. Neglecting the
communicational skills of the students will inevitably lead to many graduates
who excel in theoretical knowledge, but who fail to pass their knowledge on to
others

5. Cheating prevention during online assessments is complicated

Unfortunately, one of the biggest disadvantages of E-Learning continues to be

cheating through various methods. Compared to on-campus students, online
students can cheat on assessments more easily as they take assessments in
their own environment and while using their personal computer. The students
cannot be directly observed during assessments without a video feed, making
cheat detection during online assessments more complicated than for
traditional testing procedures. Additionally, without a proper identity
verification system in place, students taking online assessments might be able
to let a third party take the assessment instead of themselves, resulting in a
wholly fraudulent test result

43
6. Online instructors tend to focus on theory rather than practice

Although this drawback of E-Learning is starting to be addressed and fixed by

some of the more innovative online learning platforms, the problem has yet to
disappear completely. The problem is that a large portion of E-Learning
training providers choose to focus largely (in many cases entirely) on
developing theoretical knowledge, rather than practical skills. The reason for
this is evident – theoretical lectures are considerably easier to implement in an
online learning environment than practical lectures. After all, without face-
toface communication and physical classrooms to use as a workshop,
implementing practical projects in an online course requires significantly more
prior planning than theoretical training
