UNIT 4

ADDING EMPHASIS: SO… THAT, SUCH… THAT, EVEN, ONLY

Differences Between “So” and “Such”

Both of them usually have the same meaning “very”.

Both of them show extremes.
We can use both of them to emphasizes the results or effects of something.

1. “So” + ADJECTIVE or ADVERB (that) (TAN)

We can use “so” with adjec?ves.

“So” gives meaning to the words which are expressed, “very” or “that much”.

Examples:
Tom seems so happy now.
She was so sad when my grandmother died.
I am so full. I can’t eat that.

2. “Such” (a/an) + ADJECTIVE + NOUN (that) (TAN)

We can use “such” with “adjec?ve+noun” to show extremes.

Examples:
He is such an intelligent boy.
The baby has such beau?ful toys.
These are such bad potatoes.
3. EVEN (INCLUSO)

Even BEFORE a word, phrase or part of the sentence adds emphasis or signals that
something is surprising.

We use even to refer to something surprising, unexpected, unusual or extreme.

Example:
He didn’t even have enough money to pay the rent.
You love me, even aNer the terrible things I’ve done?

4. ONLY (SOLAMENTE)

Only BEFORE a word, phrase or part of the sentence adds emphasis.

We use only as an adjec?ve to mean that there is just one or very few of something, or
that there are no others

Example:
He was the only person in the room.
Being healthy is the only thing that is important to me.

main clause

• to describe general facts or routines

Example: I feel nervous if/when/whenever I think about flying.

2 Future: if/when/whenever + simple present + will / be going to in the main clause

• for possible future situations and their results

Example:
- If you try the therapy, it will make you more confident.
(You may or may not try the therapy. But if you do, it will make you more confident.)

- When/Whenever you try the therapy, it will make you more confident.
(You will try the therapy, and when you do, it will make you more confident.)

With modals and modal-like expressions: if clause + a modal in the main clause

• to show how likely or necessary the result is

Example: Whenever you're worried, you have to try not to panic.

ALTERNATIVES TO IF
You can use real conditionals with expressions other than if, but they have different meanings:

EVEN IF: AUNQUE

Stresses that the condition doesn't matter. The condition may happen, but the result will be the same.

Example: Even if video calls improve, talking in person is much nicer.

ONLY IF, PROVIDING / PROVIDED (THAT), AS/SO LONG AS, ON CONDITION THAT:
Sólo si, proporcionando/ siempre que, mientras/siempre y cuando, a condición de que

Show the result or effect will happen when a specific condition becomes true. No other condition will have this
result.

Example: I lend you my phone, only if / provided / providing / as/so long as / on condition that you promise to
return it soon.

UNLESS: A MENOS QUE
