Introductory Message
This Self-learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions,
directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to
understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-
by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-test are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each

SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module, or
if you n eed to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better
understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer
the post-test to check self- check your learning. Answer keys are provided
for each activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the teachers are also
provided to the facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on
how they can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any
part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises
and tests. Read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering
the task in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or
facilitator.

Thank you.

Lesson Lesson 2: Performing Computer

7 Operation [PCO] - Assess information

using computer

What’s In

From the previous lesson, we've learned about the software which refers to a set of
instructions that tell the computer what to do. The software has three categories:
System Software that controls application processing, Application software a
program that is created to assist users with a specific task, and the Programming
Languages which refers to the representation of instructions in human recognizable
form. We also learned the brief history of the Internet and the Data Processing cycle
and method of processing data.
This week's module will focus on Accessing Information Using Computer
particularly on Identifying different desktop icons, different keyboard shortcuts, the
importance of keyboard techniques, and keyboard care and maintenance.

What is It

DESKTOP ICONS

A computer desktop has a collection of icons, some of which appear when you
install programs or when you install a new operating system. Icons that has an
arrow are known as shortcut or links to a programs, files or folders stored in your

PROGRAM ICONS

These icons contain an arrow and represent shortcuts to various programs.

Deleting a shortcut does not mean deleting the actual program, only the desktop
icon link to it.

1. MicrosoftWord365(word processing program)

2. Google Chrome (internet browser)

3)Acrobat Reader DC (to view PDF files)

FOLDERS AND DRIVES ICONS

Icons that display a folder represent a shortcut to a folder while an icon that show
a hard disk represent a drive installed in your computer. Double clicking a folder
icon or drive icon enables to view and see all the contents of that folder or drive.

5
FILES ICONS

Icons that display a page are files. Double clicking that icon enables you to open
the file in the program that it was created in. If no arrow appears it is not a
shortcut and indicates that it is actually saved to the desktop. Therefore, if it was
deleted, so is the actual file.

RECYCLE BIN ICON

The desktop icon for recycle bin is display as a waste paper basket with the recycle
symbol on it. Double clicking this icon will open the recycle bin window, allowing
you to permanently delete or restore files as necessary.

CREATING A DESKTOP SHORTCUTS

1) Right-click anywhere in the free space present on your desktop. Point to the New
option from the dialog box. This will redirect you to another dialog box. From there,
choose the Shortcut option.

6
2) Look for a new window asking you to browse the location of the file for which you
want to create the shortcut. You must choose the browse option and browse the file
location. As soon as you choose the location, the box will be filled itself by the
location

3) Click Next option present somewhere at the right-bottom of the working window.

4) Type a name for the shortcut. If a Finish button appears at the bottom of the
dialog box, click it. If a Next button appears at the bottom of the dialog box, click it,
choose the icon you want to use for your shortcut, and then click Finish.

7
KEYBOARD TECHNIQUES

Keyboarding refers to the ability to enter text by using the appropriate fingers
without looking at the keys. Enabling to use the computer more effective and more
productive. To better understand keyboard techniques, it is important to know the
keyboard layout below:

The central portion of the keyboard includes alphanumeric keys.

 A smaller section to the right contains the numeric keypad.

 A small set of function and directional keys between the letters and
the numeric keypad.
 A row of function keys across the top used for computer commands.

KEYBOARD TECHNIQUE

1. Home row position – it is the home position for your fingers. It should be curved
and placed on home room keys. Use bumps on F and J keys to keep fingers in
place.

a. Left hand – letters A, S, D, F

b. Right hand – letters J, K, L
2. Eyes on copy – eyes should stay on text that is being keyed at all times and not
at your keyboard for the reason that you will lose your place.

3. Feet flat on the floor – your feet serve as an anchor to your body when keying.
This will help your body from moving around with proper alignment and posture.

4. Keyboard placement – this should be placed at the end of the desk and your
body must be a hand span away from the desk.

KEYBOARD CARE AND MAINTENANCE

Dust is not just unpleasant—it can possibly harm or even ruin parts of your
computer. Cleaning your computer consistently will help you keep it working well
and prevent expensive repairs. Dust, food, liquid, and other particles can get
trapped underneath the keys on your keyboard, which can avoid it from working
properly. The simple cleaning tips below can help keep your keyboard clean.

Unplug the keyboard from the USB or PS/2 port. If the keyboard is plugged into
the PS/2 port, you will need to shut down the computer before unplugging it.

• Turn the keyboard upside down and gently shake it to remove dirt and
dust.
• Use a can of compressed air to clean between the keys.
• Moisten a cotton cloth or paper towel with rubbing alcohol and use it
to clean the tops of the keys. Do not pour alcohol or any other liquid
directly onto the keys.
• Reconnect the keyboard to the computer once it is dry. If you are
connecting it to a PS/2 port, you will need to connect it before turning
on the computer.

Dealing with liquids

If you spill liquid on the keyboard, quickly shut down the computer and disconnect
the keyboard. Then turn the keyboard upside down and allow the liquid to drain. If
the liquid is sticky, you will need to hold the keyboard on its side under running
water to rinse away the sticky liquid. Then turn the keyboard upside down to drain

10
for two days before reconnecting it. Please note that keyboard may not be fixable at
this point, but the method above is probably the best option. To prevent this
situation altogether, we recommend keeping drinks away from the computer area.
