INTRODUCTION
THE BEGINNING

The seed of sustainability was sown when founder Karan Rastogi, a

graduate from Warwick Business School (UK), came up with a unique
idea to make religion sustainable. Seeing the floral debris consuming
the Holy Ganges, our founder spent time researching eco-friendly
processes to create best out of waste. This search led to the birth of
HelpUsGreen. We launched our first 100% organic and handmade line
of biofertilizers, thus began our journey of Green Design. We soon
began producing lifestyle products, up-cycling monumental temple-
waste in India and making sustainability accessible.

6
“HelpUsGreen” is an online private label brand for organic products

under brand names Mitti and Sticks & Stones. The product

category includes incense sticks & cones and vermicompost &

plant fertilizers. the products are available in different flavors like

strawberry, khus, apple, lemon grass etc. Claims to make all the

products from the recycling of flowers used in temples and

mosques around the river Ganges by employing more than 1200

rural women under SHG program. Also, claims to have used

335k kg of flowers as raw material collected from temples &

mosques, as of July 2017.

7
WHERE THEY ARE NOW
What emerged in 2015 as a vision, has now evolved into a self-
sustaining social enterprise of over 50 eco-warriors. As of 2021, we
collect over 2.5 tonnes of floral waste everyday and flowercycle it into
lifestyle products like aromatic sticks, organic fertilizers and festive
goods.

8
HELPUSGREEN THROUGH
THE PANDEMIC

Presently, we are collecting flowers directly from farmers due to the

ongoing Pandemic, as they do not have a market to sell.

6Additionally, we collaborated with the governments of

9
Uttarakhand and Karnataka to facilitate online training to farmers

about sustainable agricultural practices and generating income

through them by creating products such as incense sticks, dyes,

herbal Holi colours.

Our team powered through COVID by collaborating with one of the

biggest incense manufacturers in India, ZedBlack. ZedBlack has a

network of thirty-six company operated depots across India, with their

products gracing the racks of +7,50,000 retail outlets via 3300

distributors. They have India’s largest range of Agarabatti &

Dhoopbatti products with more than 1200 SKUs and exports to more

than 29 countries. Under this contract, “HelpUsGreen” joined hands

to ensure that the concept of making religion sustainable reaches the

masses.

"HelpUsGreen” fosters Eco-Warriors who actively work towards

shaping perceptions about floral waste. Through the pandemic, we

10
pushed bounds by procuring flowers not only from religious grounds

but also from weddings, political rally’s and most importantly, the

farmers who drive the Indian economy.

11
MISSION
“HelpUsGreen” aspires to be the most forward thinking, ethical, and

sustainable company selling products to aid nature and its beings.

HelpUsGreen is on a mission to make sustainable and ethical

consumerism accessible, discouraging the community from splurging

on products that pollute. We aim to serve social, environmental, and

economical justice to build an equitable, green, and thriving circular

economy.

HelpUsGreen designs for the environment, using clean technology

and cradle-to-cradle philosophy mitigating waste throughout our-

products life cycle.

12
Rather than contributing to landfills, we offset them.

We also encourage product stewardship, wherein everyone involved

assumes responsibility for minimizing environmental impact of the

product at all stages. HelpUsGreen firmly observes precautionary and

preventive principles, anticipating and averting waste throughout our

operations.

13
HelpUsGreen a Brilliant Startup
Indeed!
"Swacch Bharat Abhiyan" is leading towards a right direction with the
help of HelpUsGreen, a Kanpur-based social enterprise founded by
two friends Ankit Agarwal and Karan Rastogi in the year 2015 with a
mission to save the holy river - Ganges.

The Ganges is the second most polluted river in the world and affects
400 million people. Linked to contracting dysentery, cholera, hepatitis,
and severe diarrhea – which continues to be one of the leading causes
of child mortality in India and Bangladesh. The duo came up with the
stats that every year 80,00,000 metric tons of waste flowers are
dumped into river Ganges. Toxic Arsenic, Lead and Cadmium from
the harmful farm-runoff, pesticides and insecticides used to grow
flowers mixes with the river water making it highly poisonous (PH 6-
8.5).

According to many religious beliefs, flowers that are offered during

prayers are sacrosanct and cannot be dumped into the garbage once

14
they’ve wilted. This is one of the reasons why people prefer to discard

them in rivers, lakes and other water bodies. But not many of us think

about the fertilizers and pesticides that might have been used to grow

these flowers, which then mix with the water killing fishes and creating

havoc in the fragile ecosphere of the water body ultimately causing

enormous pollution.

With over more than 420 million people who rely on it for food, water,

bathing and agriculture and not to mention the tens of Millions of

pilgrims who venture to India's most holy of rivers each year to bathe

and worship - Saving the Ganges is crucial. Armed with flowers these

young men are preserving River Ganges from becoming a religious

sewer by flowercycling the waste from temples and mosques into

patented lifestyle products providing livelihoods to 1200 rural

families.

15
Two of their products namely 'Mitti' and 'Yagya' is what I have tried to
elaborate in my blog.

 'Mitti' a 100% natural vermicompost is a power packed

shot of mineral rich nutrients and enzymes that energize the

soil, in simple words "Redbull" for plants. They collect the

auspicious flowers directly from the place of worship and

pamper them with their secret recipe. A safer alternative to

chemical fertilizers, Mitti protects the soil against alkalinity,

salinity and acidity leading to better, healthier yield in our

gardens. Since Mitti is free from all forms of chemicals, the

plants and vegetables that grow with the use of Mitti are

organic.

 While 80% of the flowers are used to make vermicompost, the

rest are crushed and made into incense sticks and yajna/havan

items. They developed a method of rolling incense sticks using

16
these flowers as opposed to the traditional method that involves

carcinogenic coal. Helpusgreen Yagya Dhoop - "Sow, don’t

throw" this tagline was very impressive and a brilliant idea.

Their unique packaging is the trademark of their products

wherein the discarded packets will grow into beautiful plants

when they come into contact with soil. Isn't that amazing?

At last I would like to say, "To pursue one's dream one have to strive

against all odds". “Ab yeh naukri chod ke phool

batorenge (Now they will leave their jobs and collect flowers),”

was Ankit’s mother’s reaction when he first pitched the idea to his

mom. Karan’s family tried to persuade him against the idea, but there

was no turning back for the duo. And this is how HelpUsGreen is

between us and trying to solving the problems related to pollution in

our country. Kudos to the team and keep up the good work going.

17
They're known for their innovative approach to tackling environmental

and social issues simultaneously. Here's how they work:

18
1. Flower Collection: HelpUsGreen collects floral waste from temples

and mosques, where flowers are offered as part of religious rituals.

These flowers would typically end up polluting water bodies after

being discarded.

2. Processing: They then process these collected flowers to extract

essential oils, organic colors, and incense sticks. This step involves

cleaning and treating the flowers to ensure they are safe and suitable

for further use.

3. Product Creation: The extracted materials are used to create a

range of eco-friendly products, including natural dyes for textiles,

aromatic oils, and organic incense sticks. These products are not only

sustainable but also have cultural and religious significance, tying back

to the flowers' origin.

19
4. Social Impact: HelpUsGreen's model has a significant social

impact. It provides employment opportunities to women from

marginalized communities, empowering them economically.

Additionally, by recycling floral waste, they contribute to

environmental conservation efforts, reducing pollution in water

bodies.

5. Market Expansion: HelpUsGreen has been exploring various

avenues to expand its market reach. This includes partnering with

retailers, online platforms, and even exporting their products to

international markets. By doing so, they not only increase their

revenue but also spread awareness about sustainable practices on a

global scale.

Overall, HelpUsGreen exemplifies how innovative thinking and a

focus on social and environmental responsibility can create positive

change while also building a successful business.

20
A Colourful
Solution to Flower-
waste
In India, Shiva is the god of destruction. His job is to destroy the

universe to re-create it. Every morning, Hindu temple bells ring out

across the mist. The sound mingles with chanting, as groups of people

gather to offer orange and pink flowers, milk and incense.

But in the same way that metal can be melted down and cast into a

beautiful statue, Shiva’s strength lies not in destruction but in the

creation of something new. Where there is disruption there is renewal,

and worshippers pray for opportunity and positive change.

21
This is what entrepreneur and Young Champion of the Earth

finalist Ankit Agarwal contemplated one day, when he hit upon an

idea. Looking out onto the River Ganges—the lifeline for more than

22
400 million people which provides 40 per cent of India’s population

with water—he realized a paradox.

The Ganges river has deep religious significance for Hindus. Millions

bathe in its waters, believing they wash away sins. It is also highly

polluted. “As I was thinking about this, a temple truck dumped flowers

right in front of me. Then it struck me: this is something I’ve seen all

my life. I didn’t think of flowers as pollution. I started studying the

life-cycle of flowers and was amazed,” says Agarwal.

23
From Flower Waste To Incense

“Every day, around half a million people go to temples and offer

flowers, but no one thinks what happens next,” he added. “More than

eight million tonnes of flowers are dumped in the river every year,

along with toxic pesticides and insecticides used to grow them.”

When Agarwal started collecting 18 kilograms of flowers a day,

flowers from small temples in Kanpur, Utter Pradesh—India’s most

populous state —people thought it was “nuts,” he says. With US$900

three years ago, he founded HelpUsGreen social enterprise.

Today, the company has raised US$1 million in investment.

Working directly with temples at the nearby Ganges river, the

initiative has upcycled 2,753 metric tonnes of flowers before they even

reach the river, and offset around 275 kilograms of pesticide residue

to date.

24
A small truck rolls into the factory grounds, dumping a mess of

yellow, orange and pink flowers into waiting buckets.

‘From there, the flowers are sorted and sprayed with organic

extract to remove pesticides, washed, kneed and rolled into

incense sticks and cones.

25
Deepak Mann left Delhi to work at HelpUsGreen. “The women

work with smiles on their faces. Everyone is comfortable working on

this bigger project of saving the river Ganges from pollution,” he

says.

He enterprise now supports 79 women and Agarwal has big ambitions

to bring that number to 5,000 by 2020. Most were previously working

in hard manual labour jobs in the city or as sanitary workers with

unpredictable income.

26
The Social Solution
“This is not only about switching jobs and decent wages,” explains

Mann. “The women feel their sins are washed working with the

flowers. They are from different backgrounds. They drink water

together; eat together, establishing dignity, respect and equality.”

The women are provided with national identity cards and taught to

sign their name, enabling them to open a bank account and get health

insurance. Living in slum areas—and often being illiterate—they

would not access these benefits on their own.

27
“Puja Sonkar” did not have a job before hearing about

HelpUsGreen through a friend. A year later, she has her own

bank card and is saving to send her children to school, so they

can become whatever they would like to be.

Munni Devi heard about the incense-making company through her

daughter. “I was working at the hospital nearby and my salary was not

paid on time. When you are not paid on time, you need to borrow. I

used to ask my neighbours for cold water.

“Now I have a fridge—my neighbours even ask me for water. I can

save money, which I could not do before, and we have enough for food

and water. My youngest children, aged 12 and 15, are going to school.

Because we are poor, that is the only way out,” she says.

The Startup is not only useful for the floral waste of Temples and

Mosques But, also give the happy employment life to people.

Compost made from the flower waste is sold to farmers.

28
But the real value is in making the organic, charcoal and chemical-free

incense and cones.

Biodegradable packaging is also made from the flowers, and organic

leather made from flowers is being tested.

29
Making The Big Idea Bigger
“HelpUsGreen” vision is to ensure that everyone has equal rights and

opportunity,” notes Agarwal.

He also plans to set up a micro-flower entrepreneurship franchise

model, to scale faster. “To solve this pollution problem, we need at

least 10,000 people like us,” he says.

Feng Wang, Programme Officer at UN Environment for Life Cycle

Thinking, said: “Waste previously polluting the water is now circled

back into the economy, generating revenues and more valuable organic

products, as well as creating job opportunities and new business case.

This is the thinking we need for a sustainable future with circularity

and less toxicity.”

In a small packing room, wall signs highlight 13 fragrances, from

orange and rose to eucalyptus and Lavender. Neatly crafted boxes

30
bound for customers across India contain colourful incense holders.

The destroyed flowers are transformed and given a new life.

They encourage everyone who wants to make a difference for

our planet to see if they have what it takes to be a Young

Champion of the Earth.

Fragrance of Flowercycling
by Help Us Green November 25, 2020

When two childhood friends, Ankit Agarwal and Karan Rastogi,

saw flower waste choking water bodies in and around Kanpur, they

decided to do something about it. The idea they came up with to

clean the mess has today turned into a much-acclaimed, socially

responsible enterprise that has created a niche for itself across

international markets.

In early 2015, two youngsters from Kanpur set out on a journey to

find a solution to the growing menace of flower waste polluting the

water bodies around the temples in Kanpur. Devotees would offer

flowers at temples, which at the end of the day would find their way

to the already polluted Ganga and other water bodies.

62
Young entrepreneurs Ankit Agarwal and Karan Rastogi sought to

do good, which gave birth to an innovative brand – Help Us Green.

Today, this barely 21-month-old company has entered the specialised

market of organic incense and fertiliser exports and managed to make

an impressive start.

THE SEED OF AN IDEA

A visit by a friend from Denmark in 2014 sparked the idea of Help

Us Green. The friend suggested that he could do something to help

clean the ghats (river banks) along the famous Ganga in Kanpur,

which had become extremely polluted with factory and flower waste.

Ankit Agarwal shared the idea with his childhood friend, Karan

Rastogi, and together, they took up the challenge of coming up with

a sustainable business model that would help clean up the waste. The

way forward had to be an eco-friendly process of creating a product

from waste. After a year of research, Help Us Green launched a range

63
of 100% handmade organic fertilisers (biofertilisers), incense sticks,

and dhoop cones that were made from the flower waste collected

from the river.

BEATING THE ODDS

Before the beginning of Help Us Green, Ankit Agarwal worked at

Symantec, the global cybersecurity giant, while Karan Rastogi, who

had graduated from Warwick Business School (UK), came back to

India to join his family’s shoe-manufacturing business. The duo were

already set on a path to success with their stable careers, yet they felt

the need to start their own business to explore uncharted waters.

While the unknown seemed exciting for two to-be entrepreneurs, the

idea to their family and friends seemed surprising. Even temple

authorities were surprised when the duo first approached them to take

the flowers to manufacture incense.

64
The duo set sail to start their business with an initial capital of Rs.

80,000, which was not enough capital to survive in the business

world. However, they didn’t lose hope; instead, they let it fuel the

fire of their burning desire to do good, and they ended up with

innovative ideas to save money. So, they started with packaging with

discarded boxes from a local liquor packaging unit. They also made a

deal with the owner of the farm they operated from. The deal was to

provide two tonnes of compost every month in exchange for using

the farm. Additionally, they promised to assist him in getting his

farm Ecocert-certified (Ecocert is a French certification for organic

and environmentally-friendly agri-products), making it Kanpur’s first

Ecocert-certified farm.

Help Us Green began their journey with merely 2 products: Mitti (a

vermicompost fertiliser) and Sticks and Stones (incense from flower

waste). Although, it may not seem like there is much difference

65
between us and any other company in the environmental

sustainability industry, but it couldn’t be further from the truth. We

use 17 different waste elements, including coffee residue that we

collect from coffee shops, such as Café Coffee Day and Barista in

Kanpur, and add it to the vermicompost. We also use waste elements

that help boost the fertiliser's NPK (nitrogen, phosphorous and

potassium) value. The most important differentiating factor of all is

that all our products are Ecocert-certified.

Steadily, the two products gained acceptance in foreign markets.

After this, the duo decided to make something for the Indian market

as well. They started to produce Yagya – incense sticks made from

cow dung. For this particular product, they opted for a more

traditional type of packaging; they used a religious image on the

packaging. The reason behind this was simple: the majority of the

Indians find it hard to throw away something that has an image of a

66
God on it. Additionally, they infused Tulsi (basil) seed cellulose with

the packaging cellulose. So, once someone has used our product

Yagya, they can simply sow the packaging, water it, and basil

saplings will grow from it. Quite an innovative way to reduce

packaging waste! Currently, the duo is also working on organic

soaps, for which they are awaiting government approvals.

HARD WORK PAYING OFF

Since Help Us Green’s start in 2015, we have witnessed impressive

growth. In the first year, we earned a revenue of Rs. 63 lakh, out of

which 98% was from exports. In the second year (FY 2017), we

crossed Rs. 2 crore in sales, and our domestic sales expanded by

10%! Our international clients are limited to Germany and

Switzerland for now. We plan to serve more countries once our

production increases.

67
Impressed with our initiatives, Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister,

Akhilesh Yadav, reached out to us last year to meet. He promised us

two acres of land to set up a processing unit in Varanasi to increase

our production. This new unit will be set up and start running in

April 2017.

Ankit Agarwal and Karan Rastogi also undertook a pilot project in

2016 in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, during Pushkaralu, a 12-day

religious festival on the banks of the Krishna River. While the project

was a success, Help Us Green has decided to focus on UP for now as

the company currently does not have the bandwidth for the same.

68

69
IN THE LIMELIGHT
In the process of making a mark in global markets, Help Us Green

has also received a number of accolades. For a young start-up, we

have an impressive line-up of awards to our credit, from the ISB

Diya Challenge 2015 to the IIT Indore Kalpavriksha Challenge and

the IIT-Kanpur Social Challenge 2015. However, participation and

winning aren’t about publicity for the brand. Ankit believes that

entering these competitions helps a young start-up like theirs improve

upon their products and processes as experienced people from the

industry judge these competitions. Their feedback has played a very

important role in shaping the company.

70
TIME TO BLOSSOM
With the growth in demand, Help Us Green is working on its

capacity expansion plans. During Diwali 2016, we received huge

orders from companies like Landmark Group and TCS. While the

orders were for as many as two lakh boxes, but with our current

bandwidth, it would take us nearly a year to manufacture the same.

Currently, the ‘flower cycle’ is around 1.5 tonnes of flower waste

every day, which we hope can be increased to at least 15 tonnes a day

once the Varanasi unit starts its operations. A tenfold increase should

be enough to take care of the current demand.

We are also planning to expand to various cities on the banks of the

river Ganges, Haridwar, for instance, in the coming days. Other

producers are also jumping into the fray, but we are not worried. We

71
get 10 to 15 calls daily from people trying to replicate the model.

Agarwal believes that the company has been a game-changer when it

comes to managing the problem of flower waste in the country. He

believes that it’s a win-win situation if more entrepreneurs come

ahead to seize the opportunity. Over the last few years, start-ups like

Mumbai-based Green Wave and Lucknow-based Mission Sakshama

have entered the domestic recycled flower incense market, while

Help Us Green has been making its presence felt in the international

domain. It is incredible to see our growth and how much we have

inspired people to replicate our model.

“Exports to EU accounts for 90% of Help us Green’s annual

revenue”

72
Awards
Besides tangible business results, awards bring

value to our work and motivation to our team.
