Chapter 9: Global

Change
Global change
- Describes changes in the
globa environment that
may alter the capacity of
Earth to sustain life.
- Includes:
1. Changes in climate
2. Land productivity
3. Water resources
4. Atmospheric chemistry
5. Ecological systems
Stratospheric Ozone
- Naturally occurring gas in the
stratosphere that filters UV
radiation from the sun.
- Gas of three oxygen atoms (O₃)
- “Good ozone”

Production:
1. UV radiation of the sun breaks one
oxygen molecule (O₂) into 2
oxygen atoms.
2. Each of these oxygen atoms
combines with an oxygen
molecule producing ozone
molecule (O₃).
Importance of Ozone Layer
1. Absorbs 97%-99% of
the UV radiation from
the Sun.
2. Protects all forms of life
on the earth’s surface
from the harmful effects
of the UV radiation which
can denature DNA.
3. Generates heat by
absorbing harmful solar
radiation, maintaining
the temperature in
Earth’s atmosphere.
Stratospheric ozone depletion
- Ozone-depleting substances
(ODSs) break down the ozone
layer
- Allows more UV rays to reach
earth’s
surface harming all kinds of life
forms.

Causes
1. Volcanic eruptions

2. Emission of chlorofluorocarbons
(CFCs)
3. Unregulated launches of rockets
4. Global warming
Global Climate Change
- Average long-term
changes in the
conditions (such as
temperature) over
the entire Earth.
- Climate refers to
the weather
conditions that are
expected in a
region at a
particular time of
year.
Global Climate Change
- These include warming
temperatures and changes
in precipitation, as well as
the effects of Earth’s
warming, such as:
•Rising sea levels

•Shrinking mountain glaciers

•Ice melting at a faster rate

than usual in Greenland,
Antarctica and the Arctic
•Changes in flower and plant
blooming times.
Global Climate Change Causes
Human activities
1. Burning fossil

fuels (coal, oil)

2. Deforestation

3. Increased

livestock
farming
4. Use of chemicals

like pesticides
and fertilizers
5. Fluorinated gases
Loss of Biodiversity
- Refers to the depletion or
reduction of biological
diversity due to extinction
of species.
- Will result to the death
of ecosystems
worldwide, resulting to
ending and changing of
ecosystem services
- It is predicted that half of the
world species will be extinct
by 2050.
Causes of Biodiversity Loss
1. Habitat
alteration and
destruction
Example:
deforestation,
coastal
development and
industrial activities
Causes of Biodiversity Loss
2. Pollution
- From industrial
and household
sources
Example: oil spills
Causes of Biodiversity Loss
3. Overexploitation
- Unsustainable
consumption
Example: illegal
logging,
overfishing
Causes of Biodiversity Loss

4. Global warming
and Climate
change
Causes of Biodiversity Loss

5. Illegal poaching
and wildlife trades
Causes of Biodiversity Loss

6. Diseases
- Brought by
changing climate
and other human
activities
Causes of Biodiversity Loss

7. Introduction of
invasive species
- non-native
species are
introduced to
another
ecosystem
