Function
Present continuous is used to express the idea that something is
happening now, at this very moment. It can also be used to show that
something is not happening now.
Negative Sentence
Subject + to be (is/am/are) + not + verb-ing
✓ Dodo and Dono are not/ aren’t playing football right now
✓ Linda is not/ isn’t writing a letter
Interrogative Sentence
To be (is/am/are) + Subject + verb-ing+ . . .?
✓ Are Dodo and Dono playing football right now?
✓ Is Linda writing a letter?
✓ When are Dono and Dodo playing football?
✓ Why is Linda writing a letter?
Present continuous is used to express future plan
or arrangement
For example
✓ I am going to go to Jakarta next week → I plan to go to Jakarta
next week
✓ The train is coming at 8 o’ clock → The train’s schedule is at 8 o’
clock
✓ Martha is flying to Germany next week → Martha has a plan to
go to Germany next week by plane
Present continuous is used to show activity that
happen in a long period of time
For example
✓ I am reading this Harry Potter book → in the process of reading
Harry Potter
✓ We are not planting any plant → We do not plant any plant for a
long period of time
✓ She is finishing her final project → She is in the process of
finishing the thesis
