Ventilation Control – Chemical

• Goal: O2 & CO2 level homeostasis

• Regulated by concentrations of CO2, O2,

and pH (H+)

• Central chemoreceptors
• Found in medulla

• Peripheral chemoreceptors
• Found in aortic arch & carotid arteries

• Peripheral - Glomus cells
• Found in aortic arch & carotid arteries
• Respond to changes in CO2, O2, and pH
levels in blood
• Trigger increase in ventilation when O2
levels drop significantly

Stretch Receptors
• Located in the smooth muscle lining of
some of the large conducting airways like
bronchi and bronchioles
• Respond when bronchioles are inflated or
stretched
• Main stimulus appears to be the rate of change
of lung stretch
• Signal DRG via vagus nerve
• Excessive inflation → inhibition of inspiratory
neurons of VRG

Irritant Receptors
• Nerve endings integrated in respiratory
epithelium
• Respond to irritants (ex: smoke, dust,
pollen, cold, excess mucus)
• Signal DRG via vagus nerve
• Irritation → bronchoconstriction, shallow
breathing, breath holding, and coughing
