Degree

There are 3 types of degree.

1. Positive
2. Comparative
3. Superlative

Positive Degree (Simple statement):

Structure:
Subject + verb + adjective (positive form) + noun
or,
Subject + verb + a/an + adjective (positive form) + noun

Example:
1)He is wise.
2)He is a wise man.

Characteristics of Positive degree: No other, very few, so...as, as...as

Comparative degree:

Comparison between two persons or things.

Structure:
Subject + verb + adjective (comparative form) + than + noun (singular)

Example:
1) Mina is better than Rina
2) She is wiser than him.

Characteristics of Comparative degree: than, less, er, more other, all other, any
other.
Superlative degree:

Comparison of more than two person or things.

Structure:
Subject + verb + the + adjective (superlative form) + in/ of + noun/ pronoun.

Example:
1) She is the wisest of all girls.
2)He is the best boy in the class.

Characteristics of Superlative degree: est, most, all, one of the, of any

Positive to Comparative
Structure:
Subject + verb + adjective (Comparative form) + than any other + common noun

Example:
He is good boy.
→ He is better than any other boy.

Rule:1
Positive sentence টি No other দিয়ে শুরু হয়ে Comparative করার সমে,
*subject + verb + adjective (comparative form) + than any other (instead of no
other)*

Example:
No other boy in in the class is as good as him.
→ He is better than any other boy in the class.

Rule:2

Very few দিয়ে শুরু হয়ে Comparative করার সমে,


*শেয়ের Subject + verb + adjective (comparative form) + than most other
(instead of very few) + very few এর পয়রর অংে*

Example:
Very few metals are as useful as iron.
→ Iron is more useful than most other metals.

Rule:3

So/ as + adjective + as → যুক্ত থাকয়ে Positive Degree শক Comparative করার


সমে

*শেয়ের sub + verb + not (sentence negative হয়ে not বসয়ব না) + adjective
(comparative form) + than + first subject*

Example:

He is as tall as a Palm tree


→ He is not taller than a Palm tree.

Comparative to Positive

Rule:1
Than any other / all other থাকয়ে,
*No other + any/all other এর পয়রর অংে + vreb + so/ as + adjective (positivee
form)+ as + subject*

Example:
Faisal is more active than anyother boy.
→ No other boy is as active as Faisal.

Rule:2
No less/ not less... than থাকয়ে,
*Subject + verb + as (not less এর পদরবয়তে) + adjective (positivee form) + as +
than এর পয়রর অংে *

Example:
He is not less strong you.
→ He is as strong as you.

Rule:3
Than থাকয়ে positive করার সমে,
*Than এর পয়রর অংে + verb + not (negative sentence হয়ে not হয়ব না) + so/ as
+ adjective (positive form) + as + first subject*

Example:
Jamal is wiser than Hasan.
Hasan is not as wiser as Jamal.

Rule:4

Than most/few other থাকয়ে,


*Very few + most other/ few other এর পয়রর অংে + verb (plural) + so/ as
+adjective (positive) + as + subject*

Example:
The cow is more useful than most other animals.
→ Very few animals are as useful as the cow.

Comparative to Superlative

Rule:1

Than any other / all other থাকয়ে superlative করয়ত হয়ে,


*Subject + verb + the + adjective + adjective (superlative form) + other এর
পয়রর অংে / of all (of all হয়ব যদি than all other থায়ক)*

Rule:2

Than most / few other থাকয়ে Superlative করার সমে,


*Subject+ verb + one of the + adjective (superlative form) + most other / few
other এর পয়রর অংে*

Example:
Dhaka is bigger than most othercities of Bangladesh.
→ Dhaka is one of the biggest cities in Bangladesh.

Superlative to Comparative
Rule:1

of all থাকয়ে Comparative করয়ত হয়ে,


*Subject + verb + adjective (comparative form) + than any / of all এর পয়রর
অংে।*

Example:
1)He is the wisest than any other man in the village.
→ He is wiser than any other man in the village.

2)Words worth is the most favorite of all poets to me.


→ Words worth is more favorite than all other poets to me.

Rule:2

One of the যুক্ত থাকয়ে Comparative করার সমে,

*Subject + verb + One of the উয়ে যায়ব + adjective (Comparative form) + than
most other + বাদক অংে*

Example:
She is one of the most active students in the class.
→ She is more active than most other students in the class.

Positive to Superlative

Rule:1

No other থাকয়ে Superlative করার সমে,


*Subject + verb + The + adjective (superlative form) + No other এর পর শথয়ক
verb এর আগ পযন্ত ে অংে।*

Example:
No other boy in the class is as tall as Sabbir.
→ Sabbir is the tallest boy in the class.
Rule:2

Very few থাকয়ে Superlative করার সমে,


*বায়কের শেয়ের Subject + Verb + one of the + adjective (superlative form) +
very few এর পয়রর অংে।*

Example:
Very few boys in the class are as small as Rana.
→ Rana is one of the smallest boys in the class.

Superlative to Positive

Rule:1

No other + superlative এর পয়রর অংে + verb + so/ as + adjective (positive) + as


+ subject

Example:
He is the wisest man in the village.
→ No other man in the village is as wise as he.

RUle:2

One of the থাকয়ে positive করার সমে,


*Very few + superlative degree এর পয়রর অংে + verb এর plural form বয়স +
so/as + superlative এর positive form + as +

Example:
He is one of the best boys in the class.
→ Very few boys in the class are as good as he.
