Each unit has TWO questions; either of them should be answered
All parts of question must be answered at one place
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UNIT-I
1.a) What are different types of stresses? (3m) (7M)
A hollow cylinder 2 m long has an outside diameter of 50 mm and inside diameter of
30 mm. If the cylinder is carrying a load of 25 kN, find the stress in the cylinder. Also
find the deformation of the cylinder, if the value of modulus of elasticity for the
cylinder material is 100 GPa.(4m)
1.b) Explain about Hooke’s law. (3m) (7M)
2
A straight bar of 500 mm length has its cross-sectional area of 500 mm . Find the
magnitude of the compressive load under which it will decrease its length by 0.2 mm.
Take E for the bar material as 200 GPa. (4m)
(OR)
1.c) Explain strain diagram for mild steel. (3m) (7M)
A steel rod ABCD 4.5 m long and 25 mm in diameter is subjected to the forces as
shown in Fig. below. If the value of Young’s modulus for the steel is 200 GPa,
determine its deformation. (4m)

1.d) How do you estimate the strain caused by temperature rise?(3m) (7M)
A copper bar shown in Fig. below is subjected to a tensile load of 30 kN.
Determine elongation of the bar, if E = 100 GPa.(4m)

UNIT-II
2 a) A cantilever beam AB, 2 m long carries a uniformly distributed load of 1.5 kN/m over (7M)
a length of 1.6 m from the free end. Draw shear force and bending moment diagrams
for the beam.
2b) Draw the complete shear force diagram for the overhanging beam shown in Fig. below. (7M)

(OR)

2c) A simply supported beam 6 m long is carrying a uniformly distributed load of 5 kN/m (7M)
over a length of 3 m from the right end. Draw the S.F. and B.M. diagrams for the beam
and also calculate the maximum B.M. on the section.
2d) A simply supported beam of 5 m span carries a triangular load of 30 kN. Draw S.F. (7M)
and B.M. diagrams for the beam.

UNIT-III
3a) Define and write about Section Modulus.(3m) (7M)
2
A wooden floor is required to carry a load of 12 kN/m and is to be supported by
wooden joists of 120 mm × 250 mm in section over a span of 4 metres. If the bending
stress in these wooden joists is not to exceed 8 MPa, find the spacing of the joists.(4m)
3b) A rectangular beam 300 mm deep is simply supported over a span of 4 metres. What (7M)
uniformly distributed load the beam may carry, if the bending stress is not to exceed
120 MPa. Take I = 225 × 106 mm4.
(OR)
3c) A T-shaped cross-section of a beam shown in Fig. below is subjected to a vertical shear (7M)
force of 100 kN. Calculate the shear stress at important points and draw shear stress
distribution diagram. Moment of inertia about the horizontal neutral axis is mm4.

3d) A rolled steel joist 200 mm x 160 mm wide has flange 22 mm thick and web 12 mm (7M)
thick. Find the proportion, in which the flanges and web resist shear force.
UNIT-IV
4a) Derive expression for determining deflection Simply Supported Beam with a (7M)
Uniformly Distributed Load using double integration method.
4b) A simply supported beam of 2.4 m span is subjected to a uniformly distributed load of (7M)
6 kN/m over the entire span. Calculate the maximum slope and deflection of the beam,
if its flexural rigidity is 8 × 1012 N-mm2.
(OR)
4c) A timber beam of rectangular section has a span of 4.8 metres and is simply supported (7M)
at its ends. It is required to carry a total load of 45 kN uniformly distributed over the
whole span. Find the values of the breadth (b) and depth (d) of the beam, if maximum
bending stress is not to exceed 7 MPa and maximum deflection is limited to 9.5 mm.
Take E for timber as 10.5 GPa.
4d) Derive expression for determining deflection Simply Supported Beam with a eccentric (7M)
point Load using Moment area method.
UNIT-V

5a) Derive expressions for Longitudinal stress and Circumferential stress for a Thin (7M)
Cylinder with neat sketches.
5b) A stream boiler of 800 mm diameter is made up of 10 mm thick plates. If the boiler is (7M)
subjected to an internal pressure of 2.5 MPa, find the circumferential and longitudinal
stresses induced in the boiler plates.
(OR)
5c) A cast iron pipe of 400 mm internal diameter and 100 mm thickness carries water under (7M)
a pressure of 8 N/mm2. Determine the maximum and minimum intensities of hoop
stress across the section. Also sketch the radial pressure distribution and hoop stress
distribution across the section.
