REFLECTION
After completing my internship as a criminology student, the importance of
practical training cannot be understated. The knowledge gained from textbooks
provides a solid foundation, but it is on-the-job training that truly immerses us in the field.
Throughout my on-the-job training experience, I have had the opportunity to apply the
theories and concepts I have learned in a real-world setting, allowing me to further
develop my skills as a future criminologist.
One of the major benefits of on-the-job training is the exposure to various
aspects of the criminal justice system. From my experience, I have been exposed to
different areas such as law enforcement, courts, and corrections. This exposure has
helped me understand the interconnectedness of these sectors and how they function
together to strive for justice. It has also enhanced my understanding of the challenges
and complexities that professionals face in their daily work. For example, during my time
with the local police department, I witnessed firsthand the immense pressure and stress
that police officers endure while making split-second decisions to maintain public safety.
Furthermore, on-the-job training has allowed me to develop important practical
skills, such as effective communication and critical thinking. These skills are crucial for
criminologists as they navigate through various scenarios and interact with individuals
from diverse backgrounds. Working alongside professionals, I have learned the
importance of clear and concise communication, both in written and verbal forms.
Additionally, the ability to think critically and analyze situations objectively is vital in
criminology, as it enables us to consider multiple perspectives and make informed
decisions.
Another significant aspect of on-the-job training is the opportunity to foster
relationships with experienced professionals in the field. Through mentorship and
guidance, I have gained invaluable insights and advice from seasoned practitioners.
Their expertise has provided me with a realistic understanding of the profession and has
motivated me to continue striving for excellence. These relationships have also
expanded my professional network, which will undoubtedly be beneficial for future
employment opportunities.
Moreover, on-the-job training has deepened my passion for criminology and
reinforced my commitment to pursuing a career in the field. Witnessing firsthand the
impact that criminologists have on society has inspired me to make a difference and
contribute to the improvement of our criminal justice system. It has also made me
realize that criminology is not just a theoretical discipline, but a practical one that
requires constant self-reflection and growth.
In conclusion, on-the-job training has been an invaluable experience for me as a
criminology student. It has allowed me to bridge the gap between theory and practice
and has provided me with a deeper understanding of the criminal justice system.
Through exposure to different areas, development of practical skills, mentorship, and
enhanced passion for the field, I have grown both professionally and personally. On-the-
job training is instrumental in shaping us into competent and compassionate
criminologists, ready to make a positive impact in society.
