The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) has developed a low cost, miniaturized, micro -fluidic approach to sheath flow systems used particularly in cytometery. The system utilizes a core stream and one or more sheath streams that are introduced into a single channel. The simple and straight-forward fabrication allows one or more grooves placed in the top and bottom of the channel, which directs the sheath fluid around the core stream, and separates the core stream from the walls of the channel. The patented NRL technique avoids the use of a nozzle or other constriction mechanism typically used, which can present issues with clogging. The sheath flow system completely surrounds the core stream, yet the fabrication of materials is simple and can be made from multiple materials. The system is reversible, which can be used to unsheathe the sheathed flow and recapture the core and sheath with high efficiency.
