Convection Heat Transfer

This document contains multiple passages about convective heat transfer problems involving flow over flat plates and through tubes. Some key details include: - Calculating boundary layer thickness for air flowing over a flat plate at different distances from the leading edge. - Determining boundary layer thickness, local and total heat transfer for castor oil flowing over a heated flat plate. - Calculating mass flow rate entering the boundary layer for air flowing over a flat plate at different sections. - Finding total drag force and heat transfer rate for engine oil flowing over a heated flat plate. - Computing heat transfer rate for air flowing over heated flat plates of different dimensions. - Sizing the power rating of an

TRANSFER
Air at 27°C and one atm flows over a flat plate at a
speed of 2m/sec .Calculate the boundary layer
thickness at a distance of 20 and 40cm from the
leading edge of the plate The viscosity of air at 27 °C
is 1.85 * 10-5 kg/m-sec. Also find the velocity of air
over the plate at half the boundary layer thick
nesses at these points Assume unit depth in Z
direction.
X0=0
In a certain pharmaceutical process castor oil
at 35°C flows over a flat pate at 6 cm/sec. The
plate is 6 m long and heated uniformly and
maintained at a surface temperature of 95°C.
Determine a. the hydrodynamic and thermal
boundary layer thickness at the trailing edge of
the plate, b. local heat transfer at the end of the
plate and c. total heat transfer from the surface
per unit width.
At the mean film temp of 60°C the relevant
properties of castor oil are α= 7.2 * 10-8 m2/sec,
ν=0.65 * 10-4 m2/sec, K= 0.213 W/m-k , ρ =
956.8 kg/m3
Air at 27°C and one atm flows over a flat
plate at a speed of 2m/sec .Calculate the
boundary layer thickness at a distance of
20 and 40cm from the leading edge of
the plate .Derive the expression and
calculate the mass flow rate that enters
the boundary layer between these two
sections. The viscosity of air at 27 °C is
1.85 * 10-5 kg/m-sec. Assume unit depth
in Z direction.
FLOW OVER FLATE PLATE
Engine oil at 80deg C flows over a 6m long flat
plate whose temp is 30deg C with a velocity of
3m/sec. Determine the total drag force and rate
of heat transfer over the entire plate per unit
width.
Air at atmospheric pressure and at 30degC flows
With a velocity of 6m/sec over a 2.5m * 8m flat
plate whose temperature is 120degC.Determine
the rate of heat transfer from the plate if air flows
parallel to the a.8m long side and b.the 2.5m
side.

Water is to be heated from 10°C to 80°C as it flows
through a 2cm internal diameter 7 m long tube.
The tube is equipped with an electric resistance
heater which provides uniform heating throughout
the surface of the tube. The outer surface of the
heater is well insulated so that in steady operation
all the heat generated in the heater is transferred
to the water in the tube. If the system is to provide
hot water at a rate of 8liters/min determine the
power rating of the resistance heater .Also
estimate the inner surface temperature of the pipe
at the exit.
