Introduction to Computer Applications
• History of the Modern Computer
(Assignment1) Computer: A programmable electronic device that can store, retrieve, and process data. The word “Computer” emerged during WWII, people who operated desk calculators were called: Computers. Types of Computer Computer Generations • Generation in computer talk is a step in technology. It provide a framework for the growth of computer industry • Originally it was used to distinguished between various hardware technologies, but now it has been extended to include both hardware and software • Till today there are five computer generations 5 basic operations of a Computer • Inputting: the process of entering data and instructions into the computer system • Storing: saving data and instructions to make them readily available for initial or additional processing • Processing: performing arithmetic operations or logical operations (= , < , >) on data to convert them into useful information • Outputting: the process of producing useful information for the user such as printed reports • Controlling: Directing the manner and sequence in which all of the above operations are performed Basic organization of a Computer system Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) • ALU of a computer system is a place where the actual executions of instructions take places during processing operation.
Control Unit (CU)
• CU of a computer system manages and coordinates the operations of all other components of the computer Central Processing Unit I/O Devices Commonly used I/O Devices Logical System Architecture
