Fish – Labeo dyocheilus and Labeo dero
• Both are important food fish inhibiting upland
streams and rivers at a mean sea level (MSL) of
400-800m in lower Himalayan region of
Uttaranchal

• Locally L. dyocheilus is known as Kali, Kali rohu

or Khadd and L. dero is known as Moh

Order - Cypriniformes
Family - Cyprinidae
Sub family – Cyprininae
Status
• Vulnerable fish Dubey, 1994 and Prasad, 1994

• Vulnerable fish - Perspective Plan Document

(VISION 2020) of National Bureau of Fish
Genetic Resources (NBFGR), Lucknow

• Threatened Desai, 1994

Reasons for loss of fish populations

• Indiscriminate exploitation

• Habitat loss

• Pollution
Strategies for fisheries management

• Catch regulation

• Habitat restoration

• Stock supplementation
Conservation strategies

• In-Situ – in natural habitat

• Ex-Situ –
1. Cryopreservation
2. Maintaining stock in captivity
Objective

• Collection of broodstock from nature & rearing in

captivity to full maturity

• Seed production through induced breeding in

captivity
Collection Site

• The adult specimens of L. dyocheilus and L. dero

were collected from Marchula, Domunda (Ram
ganga river) and Kosi barrage, Tiger top (Kosi
river)

• Collection year 2000 - 2004

River bed Kosi
Ram Nagar Barrage
Rearing and Feeding
• Adults collected from nature were brought in live
condition and were reared in earthen ponds at
College of Fisheries, Pantnagar

• Regular water supplementation through borewell

water feeding

• Feeding with conventional fish feed (oilcake and

rice polish, 1:1) @ 5% body weight, twice daily
