Density

Density is a measure of how compact a substance is, defined as mass per unit volume. The density of water is 1000 kg/m3, while ice is less dense at 920 kg/m3. Gases are the least dense, with air having a density of 1.29 kg/m3. Density can be used to calculate whether an object will float or sink in water based on if it is more or less dense than water. Examples are provided for calculating density using mass and volume values.

Density

Physics
Density formula
• Density, is the substance's mass per unit of volume.
The symbol most often used for density is ρ, although
the Latin letter D can also be used.
• SI unit for density is Kg / m³ ( per meter cube)
• Density of water is 1000 kg / m³
How does density work ?
• . If an object is more dense than water it will sink when
placed in water, and if it is less dense than water it will
float. Density is a characteristic property of a
substance and doesn't depend on the amount of
substance.
Density of water and other substance
• density of water is 997 kg/m³
• density of (other substance ) Ice is 920 (g/cm³)
• Density of (other substance ) wood 400 - 1200
• Gas ( air ) has the lowest density 1.29 kg/m³
Calculating Density
• A sample of alcohol has a volume of 200 cm³ and
the mass of the alcohol was measured to be 150.0
Step 1g.: List
what down the density ofStep
is the the2sample
: calculatein
theg/cm³
density
values
Density = M / V
M = 150 .0 g Density = 150.0 g / 200 cm³
V = 200 cm³
D = 0.75 g/cm³

D=?
Example :

• Calculate the density of mercury if 500cm³ has a mass

of 6.6 kg give your answer in g/cm³
Step 1 : convert the units Step 2 : Find the density

Mass = 6.60 kg Density , p = M / V

Volume = 500cm³
Density , p = 6600g / 500cm³ =
Mass of mercury = 13.2 g/cm³
6.60kg * 1000 = 6600g
