INTRODUCTION TO

GRAPHS
CARTESIAN PLANE

 A cartesian plane is formed and

defined by two perpendicular
number lines :

 The x−axis is horizontal

 The y−axis is vertical.

 These are called as the coordinate

axes.
CARTESIAN PLANE

 The point at which the two

axes meet is called the zero
or origin of the cartesian
plane.

 The coordinate axes divide

a Cartesian plane into four
regions (parts), called as
Quadrants
LOCATING A POINT ON A CARTESIAN
PLANE
An ordered pair of numbers are used to represent
any given point on a cartesian plane.

 They are written in the

form (x, y) where x represents
the x-coordinate of the point
and y represents the y-
coordinate of the point.
ABSCISSA, ORDINATE

 The x-coordinate is also

called as abscissa

 The distance of a point

from y-axis scaled with
the x-axis is called
abscissa
ABSCISSA, ORDINATE

 The y-coordinate is also

called as ordinate

 The distance of a point

from x-axis scaled with
the y-axis is called
ordinate
LINEAR GRAPH

The points plotted on

cartesian plane, when joined
together, lie on a straight
line, we get a graph called a
linear graph
APPLICATION OF LINEAR
GRAPHS
 A Linear Graph shows the relationship between two
quantities

 Where one is independent and the other depends

upon the independent one- that is, when one quantity
changes, the other quantity also changes

 This relationship is represented by linear graph.

EXAMPLES OF LINEAR GRAPHS

 A distance-time graph
shows how far an object has
travelled in a given time.

 It is a simple line graph that

denotes distance versus
time findings on the graph.

 Here Time is independent

variable and Distance is the
dependent variable
EXAMPLES OF LINEAR GRAPHS
 A Perimeter-Side graph shows
variation in the value of
perimeter upon changing the
side of square.

 It is a simple line graph that

denotes Perimeter versus Side
findings on the graph.

 Here Perimeter is
dependent variable and
Side is the independent
