Ethical Considerations in the Health Care Industry
3 Credit Hours

Students will be introduced to ethical behavior and professional practice expected in healthcare. Topics will include communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, all-hazard preparation, needs of the patient, death, and dying. (3 lecture hours)

Surgical Asepsis and Sterile Technique
4 Credit Hours

Students will be introduced to the operating room facility and preoperative preparation. Students will demonstrate proper sterile and aseptic technique while completing hands-on surgical skills. Operating room surgical equipment, instrumentation, and supplies will also be addressed. (3 lecture hours, 3 lab hours)

SURGT 1101
Surgical Health and Technological Sciences
3 Credit Hours

Students will be introduced to microbiology, anesthesia, pharmacology, and technological sciences such as information technology, electricity, lasers, minimally invasive surgery, and interventional radiology as it pertains to the surgical technologist. (3 lecture hours)

Prerequisite: Admission to the Surgical Technology program.

SURGT 1102
Surgical Technology Skills
3 Credit Hours

Students will be introduced to the hands-on perioperative skills required for the surgical technologist in the operating room. Hands-on skills will include those performed in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative environment. Assistant circulator duties will also be addressed. (1 lecture hour, 6 lab hours)

Prerequisite: Admission to the Surgical Technology program.

SURGT 1103
Surgical Technology Concepts III
12 Credit Hours

Concepts of Surgical Technology Concepts II will be continued with emphasis on acquiring proficiencies in the clinical setting. Students will be introduced to advanced theory in surgical technology and surgical practices. (11 lecture hours, 12 clinical hours)

Prerequisite: SURGT 1102 with grade of C or better, or equivalent.

SURGT 1201
Surgical Technology Concepts
3 Credit Hours

Students will be introduced to the legal issues and risk management tools necessary for the operating room. Intraoperative and postoperative care will be offered to the surgical patient. (3 lecture hours)

Prerequisite: Completion of SURGT 1101 and SURGT 1102, both with a grade of C or better, or equivalent, or concurrent enrollment in SURGT 1101 and SURGT 1102. Please note a student's ability to remain enrolled in SURGT 1201 is contingent on completion of SURGT 1101 and SURGT 1102 with a grade of C or better in both.

SURGT 1202
Surgical Technology Practicum I
3 Credit Hours

The concepts of surgical technology will be applied towards a practical experience in the operating room. Students receive hands-on experience, under the guidance of a preceptor, to implement didactic knowledge during a surgical patient procedure. Students will observe and demonstrate hands-on surgical skills. (2 lecture hours, 6 clinical hours)

Prerequisite: Completion of SURGT 1101 and SURGT 1102, both with a grade of C or better, or equivalent, or concurrent enrollment in SURGT 1101 and SURGT 1102. Please note a student's ability to remain enrolled in SURGT 1202 is contingent on completion of SURGT 1101 and SURGT 1102 with a grade of C or better in both.

SURGT 1301
Surgical Pathophysiology and Patient Procedures I
3 Credit Hours

Students will be introduced to the pathophysiology, surgical procedures, and instrumentation for the following surgical services: general, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmic, otorhinolaryngology, and oral maxillofacial. (3 lecture hours)

Prerequisite: SURGT 1201 and SURGT 1202, both with a grade of C or better, or equivalent.

SURGT 1302
Surgical Technology Practicum II
3 Credit Hours

The concepts of surgical technology will be applied towards a practical experience in the operating room. Students receive hands-on experience, under the guidance of a preceptor, to implement didactic knowledge during a surgical patient procedure. Students will observe and demonstrate hands-on surgical skills. (2 lecture hours, 6 clinical hours)

Prerequisite: SURGT 1201 and SURGT 1202, both with a grade of C or better, or equivalent.

SURGT 1401
Surgical Pathophysiology and Patient Procedures II

Students will be introduced to the pathophysiology, surgical procedures, and instrumentation for the following surgical services: plastic and reconstructive, genitourinary, orthopedic, cardiothoracic, peripheral vascular, and neurology. (3 lecture hours)

Prerequisite: Completion of SURGT 1301 and SURGT 1302, both with a grade of C or better, or equivalent, or concurrent enrollment in SURGT 1301 and SURGT 1302. Please note a student's ability to remain enrolled in SURGT 1401 is contingent on completion of SURGT 1301 and SURGT 1302 with a grade of C or better in both.

SURGT 1402
Surgical Technology Practicum III
3 Credit Hours

The concepts of surgical technology will be applied towards a practical experience in the operating room. Professional Practice
4 Credit Hours

Students will be introduced to the employability and leadership skills needed to become successful professional members of the healthcare team. The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) exam is an important piece of the program required for employment. Students will review necessary content to prepare them for the CST exam. (4 lecture hours)

Prerequisite: SURGT 1401 and SURGT 1402, both with a grade of C or better, or equivalent.

Introductory exploration and analysis of selected surgical technology topics with a specific theme indicated by course title listed in college class schedule. This course may be taken four times for credit as long as different topics are selected. (1 to 3 lecture hours)

Independent Study

Exploration and analysis of topics within the discipline to meet individual student-defined course description, goals, objectives, topical outline, and methods of evaluation in coordination with, and approved by the instructor. This course may be taken four times for credit as long as different topics are selected. (2 to 8 lab hours)

Prerequisite: Consent of instructor is required.

Internship (Career & Technical Ed)
1-4 Credit Hours

Course requires participation in Career and Technical Education work experience with onsite supervision. Internship learning objectives are developed by student and faculty member, with approval of employer, to provide appropriate work-based learning experiences. Credit is earned by working a minimum of 75 clock hours per semester credit hour, up to a maximum of four credits. (5 to 20 lab hours)

Prerequisite: Consent of instructor and 2.0 cumulative grade point average; 12 semester credits earned in a related field of study; students work with Career Services staff to obtain approval of the internship by the dean from the academic discipline where the student is planning to earn credit.
