Standards/Objectives:
Standard 2: Students will be able to recognize basic pressing equipment (Psychomotor Domain, Level 1: Perception). Objective 1: Identify parts and functions of irons (Cognitive Domain,
Level 1: Knowledge).

! ! !

Identify temperature settings with different fiber content

(Cognitive Domain, Level 1: Knowledge).

Comprehension).

Explain the maintenance, cleaning and storage of an iron

(Cognitive Domain, Level 2: Comprehension).

Introduction/Set Induction (5 minutes):

Lesson Body (30 minutes) (Clothing 1/Inquiry-Based Instruction)

Inquiry-Based Instruction PHASE 1: Confrontation with the Problem (2 minutes): Students will be asked: How do we determine the right setting for the iron on different types of fabrics, how to iron to get the best results. PHASE 2: Data Gathering-Verification (5 minutes): Look at different swatches of fabrics being pressed wrongly and help such as wool being pressed at a low temp or without a pressing cloth causing it not to be pressed crisp or shiny. An organza or rayon pressed at a high temp causing holes in the fabric. PHASE 3: Data Gathering-Experimentation (15 minutes): The students will now take different swatches of fabric and make a prediction of what temperature setting to set the iron and then iron their different swatches. (Use older irons so that they could safely iron all of the fabrics and if it is to hot and burns the irons wont be ruined). Make a chart with the different temperature settings. The will also go over some of the safety with irons and how to clean them correctly. PHASE 4: Organizing, Formulating, & Explanation (5 minutes): With their charts we will then make a big chart to go on the wall above the ironing area that they students can see the different types of fabric, and adjust the setting accordingly to their need. We will make a safety chart as well to go by the irons in case there is something that happens while they are ironing they can start to solve the problem by themselves and then come to the teacher if they need to. PHASE 5: Analysis of Inquiry Process (3 minutes): With this the students will then look back at the different clothing items and decide what type of iron setting would be appropriate for the item.

Transition (5 minutes):
The students will clean up all of the fabric scraps and put them away. Each group will be responsible for making sure that the irons are unplugged.

Summary/Closure (7 minutes):
Review the proper way to store the iron, what settings to use, and how to handle the iron safely.

Assessment/Evaluation:
Verbal quiz asking questions such as: What setting would you use on this fabric (hold up a variety of fabrics) How should irons be stored? How should you clean an iron?
