ABSTRACT

Text Writing Skill of the Tenth Graders of SMA Negeri 1 Candimulyo in the School Year
2019/2020. A paper. Faculty of Education and Teachers Training. Tidar University.

Writing is one of the English language skills that have to be mastered by the students of
Senior High School. Some of the tenth graders of SMA Negeri 1 Candimulyo still get
difficulties in writing English especially recount text. It can be proved by the students’
average score of writing test from 35 students that is 64.4. This score does not reach the
standard minimum score, which is 75. There are some factors that influence the students’ low
writing skill. One of them is the use of supporting media in the learning process, so that the
writer conducts this research to increase their learning motivation and improve their writing
skill by using Hemingway Editor media.
There are two main objectives of this research. The first one is to know whether the use
of Hemingway Editor media can increase the learning motivation of the recount text writing
skill of the tenth graders of SMA Negeri 1 Candimulyo in the school year 2019/2020, and the
second is to know how great the improvement of the recount text writing skill of the tenth
graders of SMA Negeri 1 Candimulyo who are taught by using Hemingway Editor media.
The writer conducted a classroom action research which was divided into three stages;
they were Pre-Cycle, Cycle I, and Cycle II. The subject was the X MIPA 1 students of SMA
Negeri 1 Candimulyo in the school year 2019/2020. There were 35 students which consisted
of 9 males and 26 females. To collect the data, the writer used test and non-test techniques.
The data were analyzed by using quantitative and qualitative data analysis technique.
The result of analysis of the data shows that the use of Hemingway Editor media can
increase the students’ learning motivation and improve their writing skill in recount text. The
means score of the observation sheet from Pre-Cycle to Cycle II is 47%, 76%, and 95%, so
the improvement is 48% from Pre-Cycle to Cycle II. While the result of the test shows that
the average score of the students improve 13.86 point after they were taught using
Hemingway Editor media. In Pre-Cycle, the mean score was 64.4. In test result in Cycle I
was 69.63, while in Cycle II was 78.26.
Based on the above results, the writer concludes that Hemingway Editor media can
increase students’ learning motivation of the Recount text writing skill of the tenth graders of
SMA Negeri 1 Candimulyo in the school year 2019/2020. There is also a great improvement
of the Recount text writing skill of the tenth graders of SMA Negeri 1 Candimulyo.
The suggestion for the teacher, it is better for the English teacher to use varieties of
media in teaching English, especially in writing. Hemingway Editor media is the alternative
media in teaching recount text writing skill to the tenth graders of the senior high school. The
suggestion is also for the students, it is better for the students to improve their recount text
writing skill by using Hemingway Editor media.The students should have high motivation in
the teaching-learning process.

Hemingway Editor media to Improve the Recount text Writing Skill of the Tenth Graders of

SMA Negeri 1 Candimulyo in the school year 2019/2020”. This paper is presented as a

partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Sarjana degree in English Department, Faculty

of Education and Teachers Training, Tidar University.

The writer admits that many people have helped her in writing this paper. It would be

impossible to finish it without their supports, advices, and suggestions. Therefore, the writer

expresses deep gratitude and appreciation to Prof. Dr. Sukarno, M.Si. as the Dean of the

Faculty of Education and Teachers Training, Tidar University. The writer expresses great

gratitude to Dr. Sri Sarwanti, M.Hum as the first consultant who has given priceless

guidance, suggestions, help and support to the writer during the process of writing this paper.

The writer also expresses a great deal of thanks to Gilang Fadhilia Arvianti, S.S., M.Hum. as

the second consultant who has given valuable guidance, suggestions, support, and always

spend her time to help the writer throughout the process of finishing this paper.

Moreover, the writer is also very grateful to Drs. Rohmad Chozin, M.Ag. as the

principal of SMA Negeri 1 Candimulyo and Tatik Nurhayati, S.Pd. as the English teacher of

the X MIPA 1, who has given her an opportunity to do the research and help her in this

research. Great appreciation goes to X MIPA 1 students, who have shown good participation

and cooperation in the writing class.

Sincerely, a lot of thanks address to her beloved family. Her beloved parents Y. Iriawan

Trisnanto and V. Indriani Kusuma Wardani, the writer’s brother Vinsensius Indrawan
Putranto, who have given prayers and motivation to support the writer in writing this paper.

Great thanks are also dedicated to the writer’s best friends Palupi, Naily, Sandra and Vani,

and also All Stars Crew, all members of Grandio Sonora Tidar, all of friends in SD Negeri

Kramat 4, and all of her friends who cannot mentioned here, for their kindly helps,

suggestions, supports and everything in finishing this paper.

Eventually, the writer expects that this paper can give some contributions to the world

of education especially the English learners and teachers who care for the development of

English in education system. The writer really welcomes and appreciates constructive

criticisms and suggestions from the readers who have the curiosity regarding the topic and

who are interested in English Teaching.
