SMART METERS
• A Smart or advanced meter is an electric
meters that acts as a gateway for two way
communication or information exchange
between consumer and the utility.
• Measure energy usage with greater detail.
• Provide consumed energy data to utilities in
real time via home display and web based
programs.
• Detect meter tampering and offer new pricing
program to encourage peak load reduction.
Fig.2.7 Smart Energy Meter
HOW ARE SMART METERS DIFFERENT
FROM CONVENTIONAL METERS?
• Conventional meters can provide data
usage to company’s information
system for monthly billing.
• Smart meters can provide “last gasp”
notification of outages and detect
possible theft. The newer advanced
meters are considered bidirectional
and can be linked to utility’s
communication network and smart
grid as well as consumer’s home area
network.
BENEFITS OF SMART METERS

• Anti Theft
• Two way Communication
• Real time and automatic billing
• Improved billing and Customer support operations
• Improved outage management from meters that alert utilities when customer lose
power
• Intelligent management system
• Consumer can track his usage

AUTOMATED METER READING (AMR)

• Automatic meter reading system is a technology which is used to gather data from energy
metering devices and transfer it to a central station in order to process it for billing purposes.
• Automatic meter reading system helps the customer and energy provider to access the
accurate and updated data from the meters.
• AMR system can fetch energy consumption in a hourly, monthly, yearly basis on request or
even in Real Time.
• It prevents human error in recording.
TYPES OF AMRS

Technology used Feasibility Communication Protocol

GSM based AMRs Most Feasible Stable

ZigBee based AMRs Small Scale Least Stable

Not Feasible Stable

AMRs using SCADA system
Least Feasible Very Stable
AMRs using power line communication
ADVANCED METERING INFRASTRUCTURE

• Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is

an integrated system of smart meters,
communications networks, and data
management systems that enables two-way
communication between utilities and
customers.
• AMI also enables utilities to offer new
time-based rate programs and incentives
that encourage customers to reduce peak
demand and manage energy consumption
Fig. 4.1 Working Of Smart Meter
and costs.
FUNCTIONS OF AMI

• Remote Meter Data Reading

• Pre-paid Functionality
• Net-Metering/Billing
• Alarm/Event detection, notification and reporting
• Remote Load Limiter and connection/ disconnection at defined/on demand
conditions
• Integration with other existing systems like Billing & collection software, new
connections & disconnection,Outage Management System etc.
• Security features to prevent unauthorized access to the AMI including Smart meter
& meter data etc.
CORE COMPONENT OF AMI SYSTEM

• Smart meters
• Communication infrastructure
• Head End system
• Meter Data Management system
• Web application with updated on-line data of consumers .
• Mobile app: AMI Implementing Agency (AIA) shall provide a mobile app
through which consumer shall be able to log in through android/iOS/Window
based mobile app to see information related to his/her energy consumption
APPLICATION AND FEATURES OF SMART
METERS
• Improved billing system
• Prepayment
• Fraud Detection
• Connect,Disconnect and Limit Load remotely

• Smart homes

• End Use Energy Management

• Tariff Setting (Time of use, max demand)

CONCLUSION
1. Smart Meter is a new technology to meet future perspective demand of
electricity
2. Smart meters have been introduced as a means to modernize the grids and
to reduce non technical losses, introduce remote reading and switching or
simplify the billing procedures
3. Smart Metering can be considered as building block of future smart grid
where the handling of big data and creation of business value from it will be
even more relevant and important
