c. Abstraction
“Before discussing the static and dynamic
characters, I will discuss the elements of the
story.”
A short story consists of
 setting; it tells the reader where and when
the story takes place.
 plot; the chain of related events that take
place in a story.
 theme; central idea or belief in a short
story.
 point of view; is the mode of narration that
an author employs to let the readers
“hear” and “see” what takes place in a
story.
 conflict; the main problem or struggle in a
story between the protagonist or the
opposing force.
 characters; the people, the animals or the
entities that take part in the story.

(the students are expected to raise their

“Again, what are the elements of a story?” hands)

“Ma’am, the elements of the story are

setting, plot, theme, point of view,
conflict and characters.”

In all stories, there are typically two types of

characters: the static and dynamic.

“So, Dynamic characters are defined by their

ability to change. They often undergo some very
important transformation at some point in the
story, causing them to become different people.”

“Changes considered to qualify a character as

dynamic include changes in sight or
understanding, changes in commitment, and
changes in values.”
“No, Ma’am, unless it made the character
different.”
“Do you think change in physical appearance is
considered?

“Changes in circumstance, even physical

circumstance, do not apply unless they result in
some change within the character's self.”

“Knowing that a character is dynamic proves that

you understand the change they underwent within
the story.”

“While, a static character does not change

throughout the story. No matter what they
experience, their traits remain the same.”

“Ma’am, I think they are important,

because if there are no static or dynamic
“What do you think are the importance of these characters, the story would be boring.”
types of characters in a story?”
“Ma’am, having those types of character
in the story makes it more interesting to
watch/read.”

“Both dynamic and static characters are important

to a story. Without change in a character, there
might be no plot to the story. And, without
characters who remain the same, there will be no
anchors to the story.”

d. Application

e. Generalization

“Can you share what you learned?”

“Very good!”

“Other hands, what have you learned today?”

lesson for today?

have read or watched, classify it if it is Static
or Dynamic.”
