1) a) Explain all the Maxwell equations with their physical significance.

b) The electric potential in the certain region is given by V(x,y,z) = 20x2 + 15y2 – 2 z3.
Evaluate the electric field at the point P(2,3,-1).

2) What is Meissner effect? Show that superconductors are perfect diamagnetic materials.

3) a) How the ultrasonic waves are produced using the magnetostriction?

b) How you distinguish between coordination number and number of atoms per unit cell?
Explain with help of an example.

4) What are Einstein coefficients? Derive and discuss their physical significance in context of
Laser operations.

5) a) Calculate the refractive index of core and cladding material of fibre from the following
data : NA = 0.27 and Δ = 0.03.

b) Differentiate between the step-index and graded-index multimode fibre.

6) a) Derive an expression for the variation of mass with velocity.

b) Explain briefly the implications of Michelson-Morley experiment.

7) State Schrodinger’s wave equation for a free particle in one -dimensional closed box
with infinitely hard walls. State the boundary conditions and solve it to obtain the eigen-
values and eigen-functions.

8) Differentiate between the top-down and bottom-up approach in context of synthesis of


nanomaterials. Explain the Ball-milling process for the synthesis of nanomaterials.
