Salt analysis-3 16/07/2021

Aim: To analyze and identify the given salt.

1.Preliminary Examination
S.N Experiment Observation Inference
1. Colour and appearance of the Colourless Absence of salt of
mixture is noted. Cu, Fe, Co, Ni and
Mn...
2. Solubility- A very small amount
of mixture is warmed with
following solvents in
succession.

a) In water Soluble completely or Absence of NH4+

partly and the soluble
portion gives ppt. with
Na2Co3.

b) In dil. HCL soluble Absence of 1st

group cations.

Preliminary of anions
S.N Experiment Observation Inference
1. Action with dil.H2SO4 No characteristic observation Absence of CO32- , S2-
About 10 mg of [SO32-], NO2-] and
substance is taken in . acetate
the test tube and
dilute H2SO4 is added
and warm if no
reaction is seen.
2. Action of Conc.H2SO4 No characteristic observation Absence of chloride ,
About 10mg of the bromide , iodide,
substance is warmed nitrate, acetate and
with about 0.5 ml of oxalate
conc.H2SO4

.
Preparation of Na2CO3 – Extract
About 5 mg of the substance and 15 mg of Na2CO3are taken in a china dish, distilled water is added in
excess and boiled for 15 minutes on heating block, adding distilled water at intervals to take up for the loss
of evaporation. The ppt. is removed by centrifugation and clear centrifuge known Sodium carbonate extract
contains the anions as the sodium salt together with the excess of Na2CO3 . As a result of the reaction, the
cations are eliminated as insoluble carbonates, basic carbonate hydroxide and oxide

Systematic test for anions

S.N Experiment Observation Inference
1. Few drops of Na2CO3 extract White ppt. insoluble in Presence of sulphate is
prepared is acidified with conc. mineral acid. confirmed. (SO42-)
HCl and boiled to expel CO2,
centrifuged if needed. To clear
solution a few drops of BaCl2
Solution is added.
2 To about 1 ml of the extract add White ppt. Presence of SO42 is
acetic acid and lead acetate soln. confirmed.

Original solution: The salt is soluble in water so a solution of salt in water

is taken as o.s.
Intergroup separation of Cations:
S.N Experiment Inference
1. About 1 mg of the substance is dissolved in water. To No Residue. Group 1st
the above solution dilute HCL is added and centrifuged. cation absent.
2. Centrifugate- (should not give ppt. with dil.HCL) No Residue. Group 2 cation
warmed and H2S is passed till precipitation is complete absent.
if any and centrifuged.
3. Centrifugate- H2S is boiled off. Add a few drops of con. Residue. Group 3rd Fe3+ and
HNO3 .Heat and cool the mixture. Solid NH4Cl and Al3+, reddish brown, white
excess of NH4OH Soln are added and centrifuged. gelatinous respectively.

Analysis of Group 3rd Cations.

The group 3rdppt is dissolved in 1 ml of dil.HCl and divided into two portions.
Test for Al3+
The Group 3rd ppt. is divided into 3 parts.
S.N Experiment Observation Inference
1. Take test 1st part is dissolved in Formation of Blue Presence of Al3+ is
minimum quantity of dil. HCl. To floating ppt. confirmed.
this add few drops of litmus Soln.
2. The 3rd part of the ppt. is A white gelatinous ppt. Presence of Al3+ is again
dissolved in minimum amount soluble in excess of confirmed.
of dil. HCl and NaOH is added NaOH solution
drop by drop into excess.

Result :The given salt contains sulphate as anion and Aluminium as cation so it is
Aluminium sulphate.
