COMPETENCY/CODE: Identify the different types of computer and their


applications in daily life. (LS6DC-DC-PSA-LE-6)

CONCEPT: Computer is an electronic device for storing and processing data, typically in
binary form, according to instructions given to it in a variable program. Computers play an
important role in improving services in our everyday life. It helps connect people, it gives
entertainment, boost communication and is very convenient. It has been classified in
various types.

CONCEPT EXAMPLES:
Computers have been classified under various types.
Supercomputers- is a computer with a high level of performance, it has been used
primarily for scientific and engineering work requiring exceedingly high-speed
computations.
Mainframe Computers- also called a mainframe or big iron. It is a computer used
primarily by large organizations for critical applications, bulk data processing (such as the
census and industry and consumer statistics, enterprise resource planning, and large-
scale transaction processing.
Minicomputers- In terms of size and processing capacity, minicomputers lie in between
mainframes and microcomputers. Minicomputers are also called mid-range systems or
workstations.

Microcomputers: A computer with a microprocessor and its central processing unit. They
do not occupy space as much as mainframes do. It supplemented with a keyboard and a
mouse, microcomputers can be called as personal computers. A monitor, a keyboard and
other similar input output devices, computer memory in the form of RAM and a power
supply unit come packaged in a microcomputer. These computers can fit on desks or
tables and prove to be the best choice for single-user tasks.
