Problem Set on Simple Batch Distillation

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS: This problem set must be done individually. For each items/sub-item in the
problem, you must do the following:
• Draw the schematic diagram/representation of the process that is ongoing. The diagram must include
the known values and unknown variables to be determined.
• The entire solution process (i.e., mole balances, the list of equations used, sample calculations,
etc.) must be manually handwritten. A screenshot of these handwritten solutions must be pasted
in the document.
• For the steps wherein iteration/use of Solver function is required, you may encode the necessary
data or do the screenshots of the steps performed in MS Excel.
• I encourage you to make your solutions have an organized flow by putting “Step number #” on it.
Example:
Step 1: Collect all the necessary physico-chemical data for the design of the flash drum.
Step 2: Compute for the permissible velocity of the drum.
• You may print the diagrams and then manually draw the operating lines or encode the diagrams in
the document and use MS Excel to properly graph the operating lines in the xy diagram.
• Conclude each sub-item/item by making a summary of the required answers placed or enclosed in
a box.
The file must be saved and submitted as a PDF file. Please keep your MS Excel files because I will ask for
them soon as part of your deliverables:

Word Problems:

1. A 30 mol % feed of benzene in toluene is to be distilled in a batch operation. A product having an

average composition of 45 mol % benzene is to be produced. Calculate the amount of residue,
assuming 𝛼 = 2.5 and 𝑊0 = 100.

2. A mixture of 33 mol % isopropanol in water is to be distilled at 1 atm by a simple batch distillation

until 64 percent of the charge has been vaporized. What will be the compositions of the liquid residue
remaining in the still pot and of the collected distillate? If ever this problem requires non-analytical
integration, you may only use graphical integration or numerical integration (using simple or
composite Simpson’s 1/3 rule ONLY). Do not use the trapezoidal rule.

Table 1. Vapor-liquid equilibrium data in mole

fraction of isopropanol-water mixture at P = 101
kPa
x y T (˚C)
0.0118 0.2195 93.00
0.0841 0.4620 84.02
0.1978 0.5242 82.12
0.3496 0.5686 81.25
0.4525 0.5926 80.62
0.6794 0.6821 80.16
0.7693 0.7421 80.28
0.9442 0.9160 81.51

3. A mixture consisting of 15 mol % phenol in water is to be batch distilled at 260 torr. What fraction of
the original batch remains in the still when the total distillate contains 98 mol % water? What is the
residue concentration? If ever this problem requires non-analytical integration, you may only use
graphical integration or numerical integration (using simple or composite Simpson’s 1/3 rule
ONLY). Do not use the trapezoidal rule.

Table 2. Vapor-liquid equilibrium

data at 260 torr [Ind. Eng. Chem., 17,
199 (1925)]
x, wt % (H2O) y, wt % (H2O)
1.54 41.10
4.95 79.72
6.87 82.79
7.73 84.45
19.63 89.91
28.44 91.05
39.73 91.15
82.99 91.86
89.95 92.77
93.38 94.19
95.74 95.64

Hint: Take note that the equilibrium data is expressed in terms of weight percent. One approach is
to apply your ChE calculation skills to convert all the data to mole percent first prior to answering the
problem. There are other ways to also solve this problem.
4. A mixture containing 47 mol % benzene and 53 mol % toluene is subjected to batch differential
distillation at 1 atm. The process operates until 60 mol % of the original benzene leaves in the vapor
phase. Using 𝛼 = 2.43, determine (a) the number of moles in the distillate for 355 mol of feed and
(b) the compositions of distillate and residue.
