c. At 103.4 oC:
i. What are the compositions of the liquid and vapor phases?
ii. How many moles of liquid are present?
iii. How many moles of vapor are present?
Temperature (deg C) Vapor pressure, hexane (mm Hg) Vapor pressure, octane (mm Hg)
a. Using the y-x plot, find the liquid and vapor compositions leaving the unit
for V/F = 0.5.
b. Calculate the liquid and vapor flow rates.
c. Repeat parts a and b using V/F =0.6 without using the y-x plot.
4. A vapor stream that is 40 mol% ethanol and 60 mol% water is partially condensed and
sent to flash drum operating at 1 atm.
a. What is the highest vapor mole fraction of ethanol that can be produced?
b. If 60% of the feed stream is liquefied, what are the outlet mole fractions for
ethanol in the liquid and vapor streams?
5. A flash unit separates methanol and water at 1 atm pressure. The feed rate is 100
kmol/h. Equilibrium data is shown below.
a. The feed is 40 mol% methanol and 60% of the feed is vaporized. Find the
compositions of the liquid and vapor product streams.
b. The feed is 40 mol% and the product temperatures are both 78 C. Find the
compositions of the liquid and vapor product streams, and the V/F.
c. We desire a vapor product that is 80 mol% methanol and want to operate at
V/F = 0.3. Find the feed composition.
6. Two flash distillation steps are connected as shown in the diagram below. Both are at 1
atm pressure. The feed (10,000 kmol/h) to the first step is methanol and water with 55
mol% methanol. The second step operates with (V/F)2 = 0.7 and the liquid composition
leaving is 25 mol% methanol. Equilibrium data are shown below.
