Instruction: Read the scenario carefully and answer the following questions. (3 items x 10 points)
Imagine standing on a bridge over two (2) narrow ravines, each with rail tracks at their base.
In the distance you see a runaway train speeding along the tracks. It is heading towards the first
ravine in which there are five (5) people. You cannot stop or slow the train, but you are standing
next to a lever, which you can pull to switch the train to the tracks heading into the second ravine.
Unfortunately, there is one (1) person in the second ravine.
For each of the three (3) statements below, reason out why you would pull or not pull the
lever if you only had that one (1) piece of extra information.
1. The person in the second ravine asks you to divert the train to avoid killing those in the
first ravine.Would you pull the lever? Why or why not?
I'll change the route of the train if the person in the second ravine asks me to do so in order to prevent
killing those in the first ravine. Because the lives of the five individuals in the first ravine are more
essential than the life of one person, I would pull the lever to preserve their lives, sacrificing one person's
life in the second ravine. I believe I should take into account the lives of multiple people rather than simply
one. It would be better if there was a possibility to save the lives of more people; at the very least, I saved
a life. Nevertheless, each person's life is valuable and precious, regardless of how many lives I was able
to save.
2. The people in the first ravine ask you not to divert the train to the second ravine. Would you
pull thelever? Why or why not?
I'll abide by the desire of the first ravine homeowners to not reroute the train to the second ravine.
However, in this case, I choose to sacrifice their lives because they are aware that they are criminals
and may ask that the train not be diverted because they believe that situation to be their punishment
for what they did. The life of one person is better to be saved without knowing that one person in the
second ravine is an internationally renowned cancer specialist. Since they feel this is the outcome of
their deeds, they would rather give their life than those of a single individual.
