Test RC Ii - Sem I 2022-2023

This document contains instructions for a test on Reinforced Concrete Design II. It includes 3 questions assessing different aspects of reinforced concrete design. Question 1 has 6 parts asking about design criteria, characteristic actions, failure modes, cracking control methods, durability requirements, and deflection control. Question 2 provides design data for a square pad foundation and asks to determine the footing size and reinforcement. Question 3 involves the design of a cantilever retaining wall, including analyzing stability and designing reinforcement.

QUESTION 1 (30 MARKS)

a. Reinforced concrete design is the process of determination of reliable structural

system, selection of suitable materials, determination of optimum member sizes
and steel reinforcements for the structure to be built. The aim is to ensure that
the structure will perform satisfactory throughout the design life. Briefly
explains the criteria which the structure should satisfy. (5 marks)

b. Action is the EC2 terminology for loads and imposed deformations. Briefly
describe the characteristic actions used in design. (5 marks)

c. Reinforced concrete is a composite material, consisting of steel reinforcing bars

embedded in concrete. Concrete has high compressive strength but low tensile
strength. Steel can resist high tensile stresses but will buckle to comparatively
compressive stresses. Depending on the amount of reinforcing steel provided,
flexural failure may occur in three ways. Briefly describe the possible modes
of failure. (5 marks)

d. Cracks are induced in reinforced concrete elements as a result of flexural

tensile stress, diagonal tension stress, shrinkage, creep, thermal and splitting
due to bond anchorage failure. What are the measures imposed by the code
to control cracking? (5 marks)

e. Detailing and durability requirements are to ensure that a structure has a

satisfactory performance under normal circumstances throughout its lifetime.
What are the durability requirements in reinforced concrete design?
Briefly explain each of the durability aspects. (5 marks)

f. The appearance and function of a reinforced concrete beam or slab may be

impaired if the deflection under serviceability loading is excessive. What are
the methods available in Eurocode 2 to control deflection? (5 marks)

QUESTION 2 (30 MARKS)

A square pad foundation is required to support a single column transferring an axial

service load which consists of 650 kN permanent load and 200 kN variable load. Using
the provided design data, determine the suitable size of the footing and design the
reinforcement required. Aid your answer with a structural detailing.

Design data:
Characteristic strength of concrete = 25 N/mm2
Characteristic strength of reinforcement = 500 N/mm2
Soil bearing capacity = 150 N/mm2
Column dimensions = 350 mm x 350 mm
Design life = 50 years
Exposure class = XC2

QUESTION 3 (40 MARKS)

A reinforced concrete retaining wall of cantilever type is 7.0 m high above the
foundation level, as shown in Figure Q3. It retains earth with a horizontal backfill
subjected to a live load surcharge of 15 kN/m2. The safe bearing capacity of soil is 160
kN/m2 and the coefficient of friction between soil and concrete is 0.50. Assume that
the backfill has a unit weight of 18 kN/m3 and an angle of shearing resistance of 30º.
Use Grade C30 concrete, Grade 500 steel reinforcement and 50 mm nominal concrete
cover.

a. Analyze the wall stability against overturning, sliding and settlement.

(CO1: PO3 - 20 Marks)

b. Design all the necessary reinforcements required in the stem and the base,
and check shear and cracking requirements.
