Define the following
1) Iqtas: During the Sultanate, the empire was divided into provinces called Iqtas.

Answer the following questions


1) The architectural features of Qutub Minar are:
i. When originally completed, it rose to a height of 71.4 meters with four storeys.
The tower was damaged by lightning and the course of repairs and renovations.
ii. It has five storeys tapering as they ascend. Each storey is separated from the
other by projecting balcony.
iii. The entrance is through the doorway on the northen side.
iv. The minar is a circular tower about 13.8 meters in diameter at the base and
tapers to the width of around 3 meters at the summit. It has a circular stairway
of 379 steps leading to the top.
v. Red sandstone, marble anf grey quartzite were used to construct the tower.
vi. Each of the towers has a projecting balcony.
vii. Verses from the Holy Quran and some intricate carvings with floral motifs are
inscribed on this tower.

2) The Sultan himself was the commander-in-chief of the army during the sultanate
period. The department that dealt with state correspondence during the sultanate
period was the diwan-i-insha.

3) There are many steps taken by Alauddin Khilji to regulate prices were:
i) He fixed the cost of all goods such as foodgrains, sugar and cooking oil.
ii) He set up 3 different markets at Delhi – one market for foodgrains, the second for
costly cloth and the third for horses, slaves and cattle.
iii) There were strict punishments for cheating and under weighing goods.

4) Alauddin Khilji was the first ruler of Delhi who laid the foundation of a permanent
standing army. He imported quality horses and started the system of branding
horses so that the soldiers could not replace them with inferior quality horses. He
also introduced the system of chehra.
