Methodology New

The methodology for constructing plastic roads involves several steps: (1) collecting and sorting plastic waste by type, (2) cleaning and shredding the plastic into small pieces, (3) preparing an aggregate base and heating bitumen, (4) mixing the shredded plastic with hot bitumen and aggregate to create a homogeneous mixture, (5) paving the mixture onto the roadbed using standard equipment and compacting it, and (6) allowing the road to cure before applying surface treatments and performing quality testing. The dry process is commonly used, involving directly coating heated aggregate with plastic before mixing in bitumen. Proper design, mixing, compaction, and maintenance are important to ensure performance.

Chapter-: 4

Methodology
The methodology for constructing plastic roads involves several steps and considerations. While the
specific details may vary depending on local conditions, available materials, and project
requirements, here is a general outline of the steps involved in the construction of plastic roads:

4.1 Collection and Sorting of Plastic Waste:

Collect non-recyclable plastic waste, such as polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) materials,
including plastic bags, bottles, and packaging.
Sort and segregate the collected plastic waste by type to ensure uniformity in the plastic material used.

4.2 Cleaning and Processing:

Clean and preprocess the plastic waste to remove contaminants and impurities.
Shred or granulate the cleaned plastic waste into small, uniform pieces or pellets.
4.3 Aggregate Preparation:
Prepare the aggregate mix that forms the base layer of the road. This typically involves crushing and
grading stones, gravel, or sand to achieve the desired size and quality.
4.4 Bitumen Heating:
6
Heat the bitumen, a commonly used road binder, to a suitable temperature.
4.5 Mixing:
Combine the shredded plastic waste with the hot bitumen to create a plastic-modified bitumen.
Mix the plastic-modified bitumen with the prepared aggregate to create a homogeneous mix.
4.6 Paving:
Lay the plastic-modified aggregate mixture on the roadbed using conventional paving equipment,
such as pavers and rollers.
4.7 Compaction:
Compact the plastic-modified mix to achieve the desired density and compaction. Adequate
compaction is crucial to ensure the road's stability and durability.
4.8 Curing:
Allow the plastic road to cure or cool down, which may take a few hours to a few days depending on
the specific mix and environmental conditions.
4.9 Surface Finishing:
Apply the final road surface treatment, which may include the application of a sealing layer or surface
dressing, as is done in traditional road construction.
4.10 Quality Control and Testing:
Conduct quality control tests to ensure that the road meets engineering and performance standards.
This may include tests for strength, skid resistance, and durability.
4.11 Regular Maintenance:
Implement a regular maintenance schedule for the plastic road to address any wear and tear, as well
as to monitor its long-term performance. It's important to note that the successful implementation of
plastic roads depends on careful design, proper mixing and compaction, adherence to engineering
standards, and local environmental conditions. Not all types of plastic waste are suitable for use in
road construction, and the choice of plastic materials should be made based on compatibility with the
bitumen and the intended road performance.

4.12 Closure
In this chapter methodology of Plastic Roads is Presented. The next chapter will deal with Result
and Conclusion.

5. Processes used in the Construction of plastic roads
5.1 Wet process
In this process, the waste plastic is directly mixed with hot Bitumen at 1600C and this mixture is
then mixed using a mechanical stirrer. This mixture also contains additional stabilisers and requires
proper cooling. It is not popular because it requires huge investments, larger plants and more
equipment than the Dry Process.

5.2 Dry process

First the plastic waste is collected, segregated and stored. The segregation is done because certain
kinds of plastic like polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and flux sheets cannot be used due to safety concerns.
The next step involves the cleaning of the plastic. This is necessary because most of the plastic
waste collected has been used for packaging (55% in India) and hence is likely to contain residual
substances such as little bits of food which must be removed. After this the plastic goes through the
process of shredding which reduces it to the correct thickness, 2-4mm. The aggregate is heated to
around 1600C-1700C and then the plastic is added and after 30-40s a uniform coating is observed.
This coating gives it an oily look. The Bitumen is then added and the mixture is thoroughly mixed
before laying. The Bitumen is added at a temperature of around 1550C - 1630C. This temperature
is carefully regulated to make sure that the binding is strong. The process is described by the
diagram below.
