WHAT IS MEASUREMENT?
The process by which human beings obtain useful

quantitative information about the different physical
aspects of objects such as length, weight, area, volume,
time and temperature.
The word “measure” comes from the Latin word mensura
and from the Greek word metron.
Measurement and its practical applications has been
present in all human civilizations, in ancient Mesopotamia,
Egypt, India, China, the Americas, Greece and Rome.

THE IDEA OF MEASUREMENT…

• It involves the comparison of the
measured quantity with another quantity
that is used as a unit of measure. In
ancient times, parts of the human body
and nature were used as units of measure.
• The length of the foot and the stride, the
width of the hand, the span of the
forearm, and the distance between the
fingertips of the outstretched arms have
all been used as means of measuring the
length of an object.
TIME AND CALENDAR MEASUREMENTS

• Is estimated from the periodic
behavior of the Sun and the moon.
For short periods, a day is
considered as the period between
daylight and darkness. The period
from one appearance of the full
moon to another is used for the
unit of time called “moonth,” the
origin of the word month.
IN 1200 A.D
• King Henry I of England
standardized the yard as
the distance from his
nose to the tip of his
thumb with his arm
extended in to the side.

• King Edward II standardized
the inch as the length of
three grains of barley when
laid from end to end.
16 CENTURY

• King Henry VII defined
pound as the weight of 7000
dried grains of wheat.
The yard, foot, inch, pound and other

units of measure were adopted as
standard units of measure in England
and its colonies. These units of
measure were collectively known as
the English System.
The English system, however, was

found to be complicated and
sometimes inconvenient to use.
THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION OF THE

18th CENTURY
Was characterized by the
rapid growth in commerce,
trade, industry, science and
technology, hastened the
shift of some countries
from the use of the English
system or local system of
measurement to a more
convenient system.
THE BIRTHPLACE OF METRIC SYSTEM

• FRANCE
• The French Academy of Sciences formed
a committee of scientists headed by
Joseph-Louis Lagrange(1736 – 1813) to
develop a standard system of weights
and measures. The committee, after the
scientific considerations of various
possibilities, recommended the metric
system, a system of measures based on
the powers of ten.
METRICATION
The reform movement from the use
of customary or local measurement
systems and practices to the modern
metric system, spread throughout the
world due to increased foreign
market expansion and globalization.
