Words are formed by combining the letters of the alphabet. It is important to remember that the
English alphabet is composed of 26 letters with five (5) vowels and 21 consonants.

By combining some of these letters, words may be formed. Some of these words include net,
one, pen, and red. Some words have the same or similar ending sounds. They are called rhyming
words.

2. Teaching/Modeling Do you know a nursery rhyme? Can you recite some of them? Do you know that we can also
sing nursery rhymes? This time, let us sing a nursery rhyme that is familiar to everyone.
Jack and Jill Went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water
Jack fell down and broke his crown
And Jill came tumbling after
Up Jack got, and home did trot,
As fast as he could caper,
He went to bed to mend his head,
With vinegar and brown paper.

Read the words.

What have you noticed to the pair of words? Do they have the same ending sound? Rhyming
words are two or more words that have the same ending sound.
