CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has ushered in a new era

of technological innovation, transforming various aspects of our lives, including

education. The integration of AI in learning environments holds immense potential

to revolutionize the way students learn and teachers teach, offering personalized

learning experiences, real-time feedback, and automated tasks for educators. This

transformative potential has sparked a growing interest in understanding the

impact of AI on student learning outcomes. However, amidst this technological

revolution, concerns arise regarding the potential for AI to exacerbate existing

inequalities in access to technology and educational resources.

Furthermore, ethical considerations surrounding data privacy and algorithmic

bias require careful attention. This study aims to investigate the effect of AI on the

academic performance of senior high school students at Calvario Peak National High

School exploring the potential benefits and challenges associated with its

implementation.

The use of AI in education has a rich history, dating back to the early days of

computer-assisted instruction. Over the years, AI has evolved significantly, leading

to the development of sophisticated learning platforms and tools that personalize

learning experiences, provide real-time feedback, and automate tasks for teachers.

The growing adoption of AI in education is driven by the desire to enhance

student engagement, improve academic performance, and address the challenges

of personalized learning in large classrooms. However, the research on the

effectiveness of AI in education is still evolving. While some studies have shown

positive effects of AI on student learning, others have highlighted potential

challenges and concerns.

In the Philippines, the integration of AI in education is still in its early stages.

While the Department of Education has recognized the potential of AI to transform

education, there is limited research on the specific impact of AI on Filipino students,

particularly at the senior high school level. This study aims to address this gap in

the literature by examining the effect of AI on the academic performance of senior

high school students at Calvario Peak National High School. By understanding the

experiences and outcomes of students at this school, this study can contribute to

the growing body of knowledge on AI in education and inform the development of

effective AI-based learning strategies in the Philippines.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to investigate the effect of artificial intelligence (AI) on the
academic performance of senior high school students at Calvario Peak
National High School. Specifically, this research seeks to answer the
following questions:

1. What is the current level of AI integration in the academic programs at

Calvario Peak National High School?
2. What is the perceived impact of AI on the academic performance of senior
high school students at Calvario Peak National High School?
3. Are there any significant differences in academic performance between
students who use AI tools and platforms regularly and those who do not?
4. What are the challenges and opportunities associated with the integration of
AI in the academic programs at Calvario Peak National High School?

Theoretical Framework
This study draws upon a blend of educational and technological theories to

provide a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between AI and student

academic performance. Constructivism, a learning theory emphasizing active

knowledge construction, suggests that AI tools can support personalized learning

experiences, interactive simulations, and independent exploration, fostering deeper

understanding. Cognitive Load Theory, which posits that the human mind has

limited processing capacity, highlights the potential of AI to reduce cognitive load

by automating tasks, providing clear instructions, and presenting information in an

engaging manner. This reduction in cognitive load can free up mental resources for

higher-order thinking skills and deeper understanding. Social Cognitive Theory,

emphasizing the importance of social interactions and modeling in learning,

suggests that AI tools can facilitate collaborative projects, peer feedback, and

access to online learning communities, fostering a sense of community and shared

learning. Finally, the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) provides a framework for

understanding how individuals adopt and use new technologies, suggesting that

perceived usefulness and ease of use are key factors influencing acceptance. This

framework can be applied to understand how students perceive and use AI tools in

their learning. By integrating these theories, this study aims to provide a nuanced

understanding of the impact of AI on academic performance, considering the active

role of learners, the cognitive processes involved, the social dynamics of learning,

and the factors influencing technology adoption.

Conceptual Framework

INPUT PROCESS OUTPUT

AI Integration Interaction with AI Tools Academic Performance

This conceptual framework examines the impact of AI integration on student

academic performance at Calvario Peak National High School. The input is AI

integration, encompassing the specific types of AI tools implemented (e.g., AI-

powered learning platforms, intelligent tutoring systems) and the level of

integration (e.g., frequency of use, curriculum integration). The process involves

how students interact with these AI tools, considering factors such as student

engagement, learning experiences, cognitive load, and social learning

opportunities. The output is academic performance, measured through grades, test

scores, and other indicators of learning progress. The framework proposes that AI

integration influences the interaction with AI tools, which in turn influences

academic performance. The specific types and level of AI integration will shape how

students engage with the tools, influencing their engagement, learning experiences,

cognitive load, and social learning opportunities. The quality and nature of student

interaction with AI tools will then impact their academic performance, potentially

leading to improved engagement, deeper understanding, and better learning

outcomes. This framework provides a structured way to analyze the impact of AI on

academic performance, considering the specific tools implemented, the nature of

student interaction, and the resulting learning outcomes.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

This study focuses on investigating the effect of artificial intelligence

(AI) on the academic performance of senior high school students at Calvario Peak

National High School. The scope of the study is limited to this specific school and its

unique context, including its curriculum, student demographics, and available

resources. The study will examine the specific AI tools and platforms implemented

at the school, the level of integration into the curriculum, and the experiences of

students using these tools. The findings of this study may not be generalizable to

other schools or educational settings due to variations in factors such as school size,

resources, and student demographics. Furthermore, the study will focus on the

academic performance of senior high school students, and the findings may not be

applicable to other grade levels. This study will also rely on self-reported data from

students and teachers, which may be subject to biases and limitations. Despite

these limitations, the study aims to provide valuable insights into the impact of AI

on student learning within the specific context of Calvario Peak National High

School, contributing to the growing body of knowledge on AI in education.
