II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Evaluating Algebraic Expression

Materials: PowerPoint Presentation, TV, bond paper, colored paper and box

III. PROCEDURE

Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity

A. Daily Routine
1. Prayer
Before we start, may I request everybody to
stand for a short prayer. Mr.__________,
kindly lead the prayer. Lord God Heavenly Father, we praise Your
prosperity and Your highness. Thank you for
all the blessings You gave and for the people
who are always there to support us. Please
forgive all our sins and give us mind full of
wisdom, heart full of mercy and a body full of
strength. Guide us throughout the day Amen.

2. Greetings
Good morning class! Good morning Sir!

How are you today? We’re doing fine, Sir.

3. Putting the Class in Order

Before you take your seat, kindly pick up the
litterings under your chair.
4. Checking of Attendance
Ms. Secretary, is there any absent today? None Sir.

Very good! Always maintain your hundred

percent attendance class.

5. Checking of Assignment
Now, did I give you assignments last meeting? No, Sir.

6. Review of the Past Lesson

Again, what is our topic last meeting? Last meeting, we discuss about polynomials?

Mr. ______, can you give an example of

polynomial? 2x2+3x+1

Very good!
Now, what is the leading co-efficient in that
polynomial Mr._________? 2, Sir.

Very good!
How about its degree and why? Yes _______. The degree of 2x+1 is 2 because the highest
exponent of the variable x is 2.

Very well said! Now Ms. ______, what is the

constant in that polynomial? 1, Sir.

Definitely!
It seems that you really understand our
previous lesson that’s why we will proceed to
the next already.
B. Presentation of the Objectives
As we continue, let us have our objectives for
today’s lesson. Everybody please read.
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. determine the value of the numerical
expressions using PEMDAS;
2. evaluate algebraic expressions for given
values of the variables; and
3. simplify algebraic expressions with speed
and accuracy.
C. Lesson Proper
1. Activity
At this time, let’s have an activity.
I have here a box with strip of papers with your
names. I will pick a strip of papers who will
recite and if you got the correct answer you
have a chance to pick a strip of papers in the
other box. A box with strip of papers with
different colors. Pink – 5 points, Red-3 points,
and white-1 point. But if you got wrong
someone will steal. You are all given a chance
to recite throughout the activities and earn
points at the end of class.
Activity 1: Simplify Me!
Direction: Simplify the following numerical
expressions : 1. 40
1. 25 + 15 = ? 2. 50
2. 5 x 12 – 10 = ? 3. 1
3. 10/(5 x 2) = ? 4. 15
4. 3 ( 2 + 3) = ? 5. 20
5. 10( 5 - 3) = ?

Did you enjoy the activity? Yes, Sir.

Th activity that we have done is a prerequisite

of our lesson for today which is all about
Evaluating Algebraic Expressions.

2. Analysis
Let say we have this algebraic expression a+5,
what will be the value when we change a into 2
The value will become 7, Sir.
Very good!
How did you get it?
a+5
2+5 = 7
Very good!
That is indeed how we evaluate algebraic
expression.
Now, how about this one:
 Evaluate b-5 when b=10.
The answer is 5 Sir because when we substitute
b as 10, it will become 10-5 which is equal to 5.
You are correct!

Next example.
 Evaluate 5x when x=-6
-30
Excellent!
Explain, how did you get -30?(pick a name)
Substitute -6 for x. 5(-6) = -30.
Very good!
How about this one?
 If x = 7, what is 21/x?
3
(Student name) explain, how did you get 3?
Substitute 7 for x. 21/7 = 3
Very good!
Did you understand it class?
Yes Sir.
Based on the activity, how do you evaluate
algebraic expressions?
To evaluate an algebraic expression, substitute a
number for the variable and simplify.
From what you have observed from the
activity, what makes algebraic expression
unique from numerical expression.
They both used PEMDAS rule but thedifference
is algebraic expressionused variable/s while
numerical expression does not.
Did you understand it class how algebraic
expression works?
Yes, Sir.
Do you have questions?
None, Sir.
3. Abstraction
If none, let’s try this activity.
Activity 2. What’s My Value!
1. What is the value of L + O – V + E, if L = 1. 7
5, O = 3, V = 2, and E=1.
2. If y = 10, what is 5y + 12? 2. 62
3. Evaluate C ÷ O + V – I + D when C=9, O = 3. 7
3, V = 5, I = 2 and D =1.
4. If C = 10, A = 1, R = 2 and E = 10, what is 4. 30
CA+RE?
5. Evaluate 5(a-5) when a=15. 5. 50

Based on the activity, how do you evaluate

algebraic expressions once again?
To evaluate an algebraic expression,
substitute a number for the variable and
simplify.
Very well said!
4. Application
Now class, get one sheet of paper and do this
activity.
I will group you class. Each group contains 8
members and you have to do a brainstorming
to solve the problem as fast as you can.
(Grouping is created)Now class, bring out a
one whole sheet of paper and do the activity
Students start answering)
Activity 3
Direction: Show the algebraic expression
formula you created to solve the 2 different
problems. You must do it within 10 minutes.
The formula is B(100)+(B-1)(10)+120 where B
stands for how many pieces of book.Yes sir (the
students pass their papers on the table).
Suppose you will order a particular book in
Shopee so that you can sell it to your
neighbors. The price of the book is ₱100. The
shipping fee of 1 book cost ₱120. If you add
another book in one order, the additional
shipping fee is only ₱10.
1. How much 14 books you order cost?
2. How much 23 books you order cost?

expression is important?

Learning algebraic expression is important

because we can used it in real life problems such
as what we do previously which is creating an
algebraic expression formula so that we can
instantly find an answer to the given
Very good! mathematical problem.

IV. Evaluation
This time, get ½ sheet of paper and answer
this.
Direction: Solve each algebraic expression
1.) 3x - 2y + 5 where x = 2 and y = 4
2.) 4x + 3y- 5 where x=-2 y = 7
3.) 9a + 3 where a = 5
4.) 4a + (12-2b) where a =12 b = 2
5.) x+ 3(x - 1) where x = 2

V. Assignment
Direction. Analyze and answer. Illustrate the
figure.
1. Find the perimeter of the polygon
whose consecutive sides are 3x , x , x2,
5x , x + 1 and 2xwhere x = 2 cm.
2. Find the area of the rectangle whose
sides are 3x2 – 2 and x + 2,where x = 5
mm.

Don’t forget to answer your assignment.

That’s all for today. Good bye class! Yes, Sir.

Goodbye, Sir. Thank you for teaching us today.

God bless us.
