place of work in order to carry out building operations (such as
brick laying, painting, etc).

 It includes
 Working platforms
 Ladders
 Guard rails
2. Forms
1. Putlog Scaffold

2. Independent Scaffold
Putlog Scaffold
A scaffolding supported on one side by props or standards
and on the other by the building itself.

The standards are set away from the wall at a distance

which will accommodate the required width of the working
platform

The standards are joined together with horizontal members

called ledgers and are tied to the building with cross
members called putlogs

It is erected as the building rises

Independent Scaffold
Has two rows of standards which are tied by cross
members- the transoms

Does not rely on the building for support

Every scaffold should be securely tied to the building at

intervals of about 3.6 m vertically and 6 m horizontally

1999: 38
3. Materials
A. Tubular steel
48mm outside diameter

The tubes can be;

Galvanized to guard against corrosion

Ungalvanized-
Special care required- such as Painting, Varnishing
Materials.

B. Aluminum alloy
 48mm outside diameter

 No protective treatment is required

 (unless they are to be used in contact with materials such as damp lime, wet
cement and sea water which can cause corrosion)

 Protective treatment- coating with bitumastic paint before use

C. Timber
Timber used is structural softwood

Timber Boards
4. Scaffold Boards
 Usually boards of softwood timber

 225x38mm section, not exceeding 4.8m in length

 To prevent the ends from splitting;

 bind the ends with not less than 25mm wide x 0.9mm
galvanized hoop iron (two fixings to each end).

 The strength of the boards should be such that Hoop iron

they can support a uniformly distributed load of
6.7 KN/M2 when supported at 1.2m centers
