Led by senior Nolan Piazza's final-round one-under-par 71, the Morehead State men's golf team rallied to finish in a tie for fifth in the Pinetree Intercollegiate hosted by Kennesaw State in Kennesaw, Ga. Morehead State finished with a three-round aggregate score of 916 with rounds of 319-297-300.

The 7,108-yard par 72 Pinetree Country Club course proved tough for the Eagles in the opening round on Monday. Morehead State posted a first-round aggregate of 319 (+31) to finish the morning round in ninth place out of ten teams competing.

The Eagles turned it around Monday afternoon led by a pair of one-over 73's by Piazza and red-shirt sophomore Colton Wilson, who shaved 12 strokes from his morning score of 85. MSU's 297 aggregate score for round two gave them a 616 total for the opening day and placed them 7th heading into the final round on Tuesday.

"It was a rough start for us," said head coach Matthew Martin. "It seemed like a carry-over from last week in Lexington. But I'm proud of how everyone responded. They all showed stretches of how well they can play, and I like the grit they showed in not letting the first round defeat them."

Piazza paced the Eagles with rounds of 77-73-71 for a total of 222 (+5). His round featured two birdies and an eagle on the par-five seventh. He placed tied for 8th, his third top-10 finish of the fall campaign. Freshman Seamus Bogun fired a final round even-par 72 for the MSU effort.

"Nolan was phenomenal," said Martin. "His first nine was tough, and for him to fight back to finish even par for the last 45 holes was impressive."

Sophomore Remy Stalcup shot 77-75 –82 for a 234 (+18) total (t-34). Junior Logan McCormick posted rounds of 80-76-79, for an aggregate 235 (+19), good for a (t-40) finish.

Wilson and Bogun finished with identical totals of 236. Wilson shot 85-73-78. Bogun carded rounds of 85-79-72. They finished tied for 42nd.

"I feel like we made a step forward from last week to this week," said Martin. "Now we have another opportunity next week on a similar set-up. Maketewah will be just as difficult."

The host team Kennesaw State won the tournament with a winning total of 870

Morehead State returns to play next week at the Xavier Invitational at Maketewah Country Club in Cincinnati to close out the fall season. After the winter break, the Eagles will resume play in mid-February in Mesquite, Nevada.
