The Morehead State Men's Golf team finished third out of a 15-team field in the Grover Page Classic led by senior Nolan Piazza who finished second individually.
Individually, the senior Piazza posted 65-71-133 (-8) to finish second in the 99-player field. Piazza paced the Eagles' first-round effort firing a seven-under-par 65, in a round that was kick-started with a rare double-eagle on the par-5 15th hole. His 65 was good for the overnight lead at the halfway point. The senior from Niagara Falls, Canada took advantage of the hole in the second round, posting eagle.
"Nolen was terrific," said Morehead State head coach Matthew Martin. "That's two weeks in a row that he's had a phenomenal round. Today, he hung in there until the end, just caught by a guy who was on fire," he said.
The Eagles posted scores of 275-287 for a nine-under-par 567 total, eight shots behind winner Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, which finished 17 under par.
"We showed glimpses of our potential. We just need to work on our execution and minimize our mistakes," said Martin.
Due to heavy rains the day before the tournament, Monday's first round was canceled and the tournament shortened to 36 holes. Morehead State was tied for the lead with former Ohio Valley Conference member Austin Peay at 275 (-13) after the Monday afternoon round. Day two proved to be challenging, as only three of the 15 teams competing posted scores below par.
"I thought our team handled some challenging conditions pretty well," said Martin. "We didn't get to play a practice round, only got to walk the course and putt the greens. Overall, I'm proud of the effort and how we rebounded after a rough patch in the middle of the round."
Freshman Seamus Bogan, playing in his second collegiate tournament, finished tied for 13th after rounds of 70-71-141 (-3). Junior Logan Liles, playing as an individual, posted 70-71 to tie his teammate.
Junior Logan McCormick shot 69-74-143 (-1), to finish T-24.
The Eagles will have a small break before heading west to Lexington to compete in the Cullen Brown Invitational hosted by the University of Kentucky at Lexington Country Club on October 7-8.
