Facts

Business is essentially an economic activity.


Profit is the driving force behind every business organisation.
The primary and basic responsibility of a business is economic, produces
goods and services and sells them to society at a profit.
Business enterprises have the responsibility to operate within the laws of the
country.
Business ethics are the moral principles to be followed by the businessmen
in relation to society.
Businessmen must disclose to the government his actual profits and pay tax
accordingly as a honest tax payer.
Every individual living in the society has certain obligations towards the
society.
A business enterprise should do business and earn money in ways that fulfill
the expectations of the society.
The concept of social responsibility is ethical.
The new understanding between business and society involves the reduction
of social cost and to work for social as well as economic betterment.

No business can survive ignoring customers, employees and society at


large.
The environment in which the business operates must be kept free from
pollution
Business is an integral part of the society and it cannot be seperated from the
society.
Enterprises have the responsibility to help the society to solve some of its
social problems.
Concept

Curricular Objectives

Social responsibility of business means the responsibility of business towards


the society. Social responsibility can be classified into four; Economic
Responsibility, Legal Responsibility, Ethical Responsibility and Discretionary
Responsibility.

To generate an idea about the term social responsibility and the different kinds of
social responsibilities of business.
Pre-requisites
Students should have an idea about business and generate the relevance of social
responsibility of business in the modern society.

PHASE 1 : INTRODUCTORY PHASE


(BRAINSTORMING AND GENERAL DISCUSSION)
In order to gain the attention of the students, the students were inspired to recall
the term social responsibility. Then the teacher begins the class by giving a
description;
The Kerala Minerals and Metals Limited Company supplies water at free of cost
in its locality and conducting various programmes such as medical awareness
programmes, health awareness programmes, waste management, classes relating
to Environmental Protection, Cyber Crimes, Traffic Rules etc..
Then the teacher motivates the students and asked certain questions based on the
above description.

Is KMML performs its social responsibility?


What are the various activities performed by KMML as a part of its social
responsibility?
Based on the above discussion, the learner reached the meaning of social
responsibility and its kinds. Then the teacher lead the students to the
concept social responsibility;
CONCEPT TO BE CONSOLIDATED

Social responsibility refers to the obligation to take those decisions and


performs those actions which are desirable in terms of the objectives and values of
our society. Business is responsible towards different groups in the society such as
shareholders, employees, consumers, community, government etc.. Social
Responsibility of business can broadly be divided into economic responsibility,
legal responsibility, ethical responsibility and discretionary responsibility.

PHASE 2 : DEVELOPMENTAL PHASE


ACTIVITY : (GROUP DISCUSSION)
The teachers divides the whole class into different groups providing
situational tasks in the form of activity sheets and scaffold each group to
complete the task in stipulated time.
GROUP 1
The Hindusthan Lever Limited is an Indian Company producing
different quality products and providing to the public at reasonable price and
thereby make profit.

What is the main aim of this company?


How the company satisfy the needs of society and the organisation?

GROUP 2
Jyothi Laboratories Limited is a Mumbai based fast moving
consumer goods producing different kinds of soaps and detergents and export
their products to other countries.

Is exporting requires any legal formalities?


Is the business responsible for obeying the laws of the country?

GROUP 3
In March 2000, Coca Cola, under its Indian subsidiary Hindustan Coca
Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd, commenced operations at its bottling plant at
Plachimada, in the southern state of Kerala. Over the next few years, the area
surrounding the plant began to feel the plants hazardous effects, as
groundwater was contaminated and toxic waste released. As a result there was
scarcity of fresh water in the locality.
Is this activity of the company ethical or not?

GROUP 4
A B C Limited is a textile company situated in kayamkulam. As a part of their
social service, the company donates Rs. 100,000/- for an Orphanage and
constructs 10 houses for the poor in the locality.
What kind of Social Responsibility referred here?

Based on the above discussion, the teacher explains various kinds of


Social Responsibility.

CONCEPT TO BE CONSOLIDATED
Social Responsibility of business can broadly be divided into four
categories, which are as follows;
ECONOMIC RESPONSIBILITY: Business is an economic
activity, its primary and basic responsibility is economic, that is
produce goods and services and sells them to the society at a
profit.

LEGAL RESPONSIBILITY: Business enterprises have the


responsibility to operate within the laws of the country. Laws are
meant for the welfare and wellbeing of the society, a law abiding
enterprise is a socially desirable enterprise as well.

ETHICAL RESPONSIBILITY: This refers to the behaviour of


business enterprises expected by society but not codified in law.
There is an element of voluntary action in performing this
responsibility.

DISCRETIONARY RESPONSIBILITY: this refers to purely


voluntary obligation that an enterprise assumes, for instance,
providing charitable contributions to educational institutions or
helping the affected people during floods or earthquakes.

PHASE 3 : CONCLUDING PHASE


Students are motivated to sum up the topic, Kinds of Social
Responsibility by recollecting the kinds of social responsibilities. Then
the teacher clarifies their doubts and concluding the class by asking
questions to the students. Then the teacher showed a chart and asked the
students to read it.
