EE—351 COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS 2

About the Course
Course Objectives:
This is a basic undergraduate course designed to develop an insight into the physical layer design
of a point-to-point communication system. This course will be taught from a system level design
perspective and fundamental principles of communication theory will be the main emphasis.
Course will start with a review of the basic signals and systems concepts and baseband
representation of passband signals. Analog amplitude and angle modulated communication
systems will be taught next in the 1st half of the semester. Review of probability theory,
characterization of noise and performance analysis of analog communication systems in the
presence of noise will be main topics for the 2nd half of the semester. Fundamentals principles
and structures of digital communication systems will be the optional topics that might be covered
at the end. A software tool Matlab will be used to simulate and analyze concepts learned in the
theory classes.

Signal Energy and Power
Signal Energy

If g(t) is a complex signal

Signal Energy a viable measure only for finite signals, what to do if the signal does not tend to 0 as
t→ ∞
Signal Power

Signal Power is nothing but the rms of the signal.
