LEARNING EPISODE The Teacher We

FIELD STUDY 2 Remember
1

I. TARGET Your Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of this Episode, I must be able to:

1. Cite the personal qualities of an effective teacher.

2. State the professional competencies expected of a teacher.

II. CLARIFY Your Task

Revisit the Learning Essentials

1. You will review the qualities of good teachers as contained in documents such as Philippine
Professional Standards for Teachers (PPSTs), the Southeast Asia Teachers Competency
Framework, and the Code of Ethics for Teachers.

2. You will view on YouTube two (2) TEDx talks on “What makes a good teacher great” and “The
Power of a Teacher”.

III. OBSERVE, ANALYZE, REFLECT

A. ANALYZE

1. From the PPSTs, the Southeast Asia Teachers Competency Standards, the Code of Ethics,
and the TEDx videos that you viewed, what competencies does a great teacher possess?

A great teacher possesses a mix of professional and personal competencies.

According to the PPSTs and other frameworks, essential competencies include strong
lesson planning, effective class management, and accurate assessment. The TEDx talks
emphasize that great teachers also inspire and connect with students on a personal
level. They show empathy, creativity, and a genuine passion for teaching, which goes
beyond just technical skills.
2. Are these competencies limited to professional competencies?

No, great teaching is not limited to professional competencies alone. While skills
like lesson planning and assessment are crucial, personal qualities such as patience,
enthusiasm, and a caring attitude are equally important. These personal traits help
build trust and connect with students, making the learning experience more
meaningful and engaging.

3. For a teacher to be great, is it enough to possess the professional competencies to plan a

lesson, execute a lesson plan, manage a class, assess learning, compute and report grades?
Explain your answer.

No, professional competence alone is not enough to make a teacher great. While being
able to plan, execute, and assess lessons is important, a teacher's ability to inspire, motivate,
and relate to students plays a very important role. For example, a teacher who connects
emotionally with students can foster a positive learning environment, which is essential for
effective teaching and learning.

4. For a teacher to be great, which is more important - personal qualities of professional

competencies?

Both personal qualities and professional competencies are important, but

personal qualities often have a greater impact on students. Traits like empathy,
enthusiasm, and resilience help teachers create a supportive and engaging classroom
atmosphere. For instance, a teacher who shows genuine care and enthusiasm can
significantly enhance student motivation and participation.

5. Who are the teachers that you remember most?

The teachers I remember most are those who were not only knowledgeable but
also caring and supportive. They took the time to understand their students' needs and
went beyond the curriculum to make learning enjoyable. Their positive influence and
encouragement made a lasting impact on my academic and personal growth.

B. REFLECT

C.
1. Which personal traits do I possess? Not possess? Where do I need improvement in?

I have the ability to listen, which is one of my personal characteristics. I, too, have
a friendly demeanor. I'm also a patient person with a strong work ethic. I don't have
good communication skills, which is one of my personal flaws. Also, I am still lacking in
the area of preparation, so in order to improve, I must continue to work on it as long as
possible because I know that preparation is the key to becoming a great teacher in the
future
2. Which professional competencies I am strongly capable of demonstrating?

To be honest, having a creative problem solving ability is one of the professional

competencies that I am very capable of demonstrating. I'm not saying I'm that good, but
I can assure them that I'm capable of it. I can come up with solutions to problems. I can
say that I am capable of problem solving. To summarize, I can analyze issues, make
decisions, and solve problems

3. In which competencies do I need to develop more?

Among the professional competencies, I believe that global perspective is the one
on which I should focus my attention and time. Why am I saying this? So that I can follow
the global trend of teaching. Also, so that in the future, I can apply innovation to my own
teaching styles. Overall, I need to work on broadening my perspective.

IV. Write Action Research Prompts

1. Observe In assisting my Resource Teacher, I observed that personal traits such as

______empathy__and professional competencies like _effective communication were least/not
displayed and as a result, students were or the class was disengaged and lacked enthusiasm.

2.Reflect The lack of these personal traits and professional competencies (mentioned in #1)
may be caused by inadequate training or a lack of awareness about their importance.

3. Plan I would like to address this problem (mentioned in #2) by conducting an action research
on integrating personal development and professional training into teacher preparation
programs.

4. Act
a) The main objective of my action research is
to improve teacher effectiveness by highlighting the importance of both personal and
professional development.

b) My specific research questions are

How do personal traits impact student engagement? What are the most effective ways to
develop these traits in teachers?

c) To answer my specific research questions, I

will gather data through surveys and observations, and review existing literature on
teacher development programs.
V. Work on my Artifacts
(Attach your reflection here)

Reflection

In my journey to understand what makes a teacher effective, I've learned that both
personal qualities and professional skills play crucial roles. Effective teachers are not just
knowledgeable in their subjects, they are also patient, caring, and adaptable. They communicate
well, inspire students, and create a positive learning environment.

From my observations, I've noticed that I have strong communication skills and a genuine
passion for teaching, which helps me connect with students and explain concepts clearly. However,
I've also realized that I need to improve my organizational skills and classroom management.
Sometimes, I struggle with keeping students focused and managing classroom behavior effectively.

To grow as a teacher, I plan to work on my classroom management strategies and become

more organized. I will seek out professional development opportunities to learn new techniques
and get feedback from more experienced teachers. By doing this, I aim to create a more structured
and engaging learning environment for my students.

This reflection helps me see where I am doing well and where I need to improve. It reminds
me that being a great teacher involves continuous learning and self-improvement. I am committed
to working on these areas to become a better teacher and make a positive impact on my students'
lives.

And so, I will do my best to develop all of the competencies because, for me, each
competency requires improvement, and I want to excel in each competency in order to be a better
teacher for my students. Also, I want to have these qualities now that I'm halfway through my
future career. Maybe not right now, but I hope to have those qualities in the near future. It is
simply a matter of willingness and acceptance to develop such qualities. It might be difficult, but
I'm willing to give it a shot and see what happens.
