Changing speed
When the speed of something changes we say that it is accelerating.

Acceleration tells the rate at which velocity changes with time, in terms of both
speed and direction

Acceleration is a vector quantity


Calculating acceleration
To calculate acceleration we need to know

Initial speed

Final speed

Time taken for the change in speed

The correct definition of acceleration is change in velocity in unit of time

When the final velocity is greater than initial velocity the acceleration increases so it
is positive the object is accelerating

When the final velocity is lower than the initial velocity the acceleration is negative
and the object is slowing down or decelerating
Exercises
1. A car starts from rest and moves forward while speeding up to 24 m/s 8 s.
Calculate the car’s acceleration.

2. A car initially moving forward at a velocity of 26 m/s approaches a school and


slows down to a velocity of 11 m/s in 3 s. Calculate the car’s acceleration.
