Topic : Engine Cooling

Roll No. : 1784040036
Why it is Required ?

Approximately only 35% of the

heat energy produced by the
burning of the fuel is
converted into useful energy.

The remaining heat must be

removed from the engines
components or they would get
so hot, they could seize and
possibly melt.
Types Of Cooling System

Air Cooling
System

Liquid Cooling
System
Air Cooling System
• Air flows over cooling fins
around the outside of the
cylinder and head by the
natural motion of the vehicle.
• This method is widely used in
lighter engines where heat
generation is usually not that
much.
• This method of cooling doesn’t
requires any special
equipments or any type of
coolants.

Liquid Cooling System
• An Liquid Cooling system is the collection of parts
and substances (coolants) that work together to
maintain the engine’s temperature at optimal
levels.
• This system provide better cooling and increases
engine efficiency over higher temperatures.

a simple device mounted on the
that will keep front of the
the coolant engine and
moving as long turns whenever
as the engine is the engine is
running. running.
1. Radiators are the heat
Radiator
exchangers used for
cooling internal
combustion engines,
mainly in automobiles.
2. The function of the
radiator is to transfer
unwanted heat energy
from the coolant to the
outside air and then
return coolant to the
engine.
3. Fan(s) draw air through
and over the radiator to
increase the air flow and
improve cooling
efficiency.

Thermostat
• The thermostat is simply a valve that
measures the temperature of the
coolant and, if it is hot enough,
opens to allow the coolant to flow
through the radiator.  If the coolant
is not hot enough, the flow to the
radiator is blocked and fluid is
directed to a bypass system that
allows the coolant to return directly
back to the engine.
Radiator Fan
The radiator fan has blades that spin rapidly to provide sufficient air that
would cool the engine. It is usually mounted between the radiator and the
engine so that the air can easily get to the radiator.

Radiator Pressure Cap Radiator Hose

The radiator pressure cap is a Flexible rubber hoses carry the coolant
simple device that will maintain between the radiator, engine block and heater
pressure in the cooling system up core. As they are flexible, they allow for
to a certain point. engine vibrations without damage to the
components.
Coolant
• The coolant in today's vehicles is a mixture of ethylene
glycol (antifreeze) and water.  The recommended ratio is
fifty-fifty.
• At sea level the temperature range for water to remain
as a liquid is from 0º-100ºC (32º-212ºF).
• With the engine coolant system pressurized,
the boiling point is raised to about 125ºC (255ºF).
• The main disadvantages of using water in the coolant
system is that it can freeze in winter conditions, and
cause corrosion. Therefore, to prevent this, antifreeze
(Ethylene Glycol) is added to the water in order to lower
its freezing point to about -37ºC (-34ºF), in the case of a
50% mix.
• Other advantages of antifreeze are -:
1. Prevents winter freezing
2. Resists rust and corrosion
3. Lubricates the water pump
Liquid cooling (System
Components)
• The liquid coolant- a mixture of water, which carries the heat away
and anti-freeze which prevents the water from freezing and
damaging the engine, anti-freeze can also reduce corrosion, helping
to prevent the system becoming blocked, as the coolant warms up
with engine temperature, it expands pressuring the system. The
pressure/radiator cap must never be removed while the engine is
hot.
• Radiator- fitted in the air stream, it allows the hot coolant to be
cooled by passing the heat off into the air stream by convection.
• Thermostat-allows the engine to warm up quickly and regulates
engine temperature.
• Cooling fan-used to increase the airflow over the radiator when the
vehicle is not moving. It may be driven electrically or mechanically.
• Pressure cap-fitted to the top of the Radiator/ expansion tank, it
controls the pressure in the system.
• The Water Jackets-passages in the engine which the coolant
flows through removing heat from the engine components.
• Rubber Hoses-connect the engine to the radiator and heater,
they allow for engine movement.
• Heater-small radiator inside the car that the hot coolant flows
through heating the cars interior.
• Water Pump-circulates the coolant around the system, driven by
the engine.
