Paleolithic Era
(The Old Stone Age)
C.2,500,000-10,000 BC

It is where the earliest art

came from and also the
longest phase of Stone Age.
Humans rely on hunting
and gathering as their
source of food.
Prehistoric Periods
Mesolithic Era
(The Middle Stone Age)
From 10,000 BCE

It is characterized by more
advanced hunter-gathering,
fishing, and rudimentary

humans became nomadic.

Chauvet Cave
The Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc Cave in the Ardèche department
of southern France is a cave that contains some of the
best-preserved figurative cave paintings in the world.
The dates have been a matter of dispute but a study
published in 2012 supports placing the art in the
Aurignacian period, approximately 32,000–30,000 years
BP. Hundreds of animal paintings have been cataloged,
depicting at least 13 different species, including some
rarely or never found in other ice age paintings. Rather
than depicting only the familiar herbivores that
predominate in Paleolithic cave art, i.e. horses, aurochs,
mammoths, etc. The walls of the Chauvet Cave feature
many predatory animals, e.g., cave lions, leopards, bears,
and cave hyenas.

Paintings and Drawings
Estimated to be up to 20,000 years old, the
paintings consist primarily of large animals, once
native to the region. Lascaux is located in the
Vézère Valley where many other decorated caves
have been found since the beginning of the 20th
century (for example Les Combarelles and Font-
de-Gaume in 1901, Bernifal in 1902). Lascaux is a
complex cave with several areas (Hall of the
Bulls, Passage gallery) It was discovered on 12
September 1940 and given statutory historic
monument protection in december of the same
year.

Cueva de las Manos is located in
Patagonia in the southern part of
Argentina and contains cave paintings
that were created between 13,000 and
9,000 years ago.
The cave’s name literally means ‘Cave of
hands’ and was presented that name
because of the hundreds of stenciled
hands painted on the cave walls. The age
Cueva de las Manos of the paintings was calculated from the

Historical BackgroundDesign

The numerous paintings

and engravings found in
caves and shelters date back
to the Ice Age (Upper
Paleolithic), roughly
between 40,000 and 14,000
years ago.
The first famous cave
paintings, from the
Stone Age in
Altamira, Spain, were
made by modern
humans.
Historical Background
Sculptures, like clay bison
in Tuc d’Audoubert cave
and a bear in Montespan
cave, have been found in
the French Pyrenees.

religious function,
sometimes both but some
experts think they may
have been created within
the framework of
shamanic beliefs and
practices.
