12/11-20/2011 - Eleuthera, Bahamas

We escaped the Midwest chill in December for our fifth (Chase's second) visit to the remote out-island of Eleuthera. The weather was nearly perfect -- with highs near 80 just about every day. When the Atlantic beaches were too windy and choppy, we were able to skip over to Ten Bay Beach and Alabaster Bay on the west coast to bask in some of the more beautiful (and lonely beaches) in the Caribbean. For the most part, the island had recovered nicely from Hurricane Irene (see below for a IR sat loop of storm).  Here are just a few (non-family) pics and a lengthy time lapse.

Chicago sunrise -- view from early morning Airtran flight out of MDW on the 11th.

Long Pond Beach -- the Atlantic beach that is out the windows of our rental. Note the 3-4' of dune that was "taken" during the Hurricane.

 "High" tide at Alabaster Bay.

Patterns on the sand during low tide at Alabaster Bay.

 Sunset at Alabaster Bay.

The view inside a decaying (mess hall or admin building?) at the old US NAVFAC Eleuthera, which closed in 1980.

One of the unique paintings added (by Bahamians?) to a wall in the above pictured building ...

One of many nice cu found at Ten Bay Beach -- not bad for a December view.

Hurricane Irene moving over Eleuthera.

Time lapse of a few perspectives during the week.
