Have you ever been to Mindanao? The 16 th President of our
country, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, is from the island of Mindanao.
Perhaps you have heard him talking about the Muslims of Mindanao
and the Lumads or the indigenous people of Mindanao who were there
long before the Filipinos from Luzon and Visayas migrated to Mindanao.
Mindanao is one of the largest islands in the Philippines. It is
surrounded by four seas: Sulu Sea to the west, Philippine Sea to the
east, Celebes Sea to the south, and Mindanao Sea to the north. It is
home to some famous mountains and volcanoes like the Mt. Apo, which
attracts tourism. Mindanao is home to almost about 26 million Filipinos
(2018). It is divided into 6 regions.
Mindanao’s ethnic music is based on two musical and cultural
traditions namely, the Islamic and Non-Islamic ethnic culture. Islamic
cultures and traditions are observed among the Maguinadaon,
Maranao, Yakan, Samal, and Tausug. On the other hand, non-Islamic
traditions are practiced by the Manobo, Bagobo, Subanon, Bilaan,
Tiruray, T’boli, and other native ethnic groups or Lumad.
How would you describe the music of Mindanao? Share your
ideas with your classmates.

Knowing the various Philippine folk dances is very important
because it helps in understanding our culture and history. The art of
dancing these folk and ethnic dances is taught in school because it helps
Filipino students develop their aesthetic and artistic sense. This
refinement of the senses brought by the arts, music and dances
contributes to one’s deep appreciation of his identity as Filipino.
It is only when we develop this strong sense of national identity that
we can effectively contribute in the development of our country.
Could you name some the famous folk and ethnic dances in your
region? What is folk dance or an ethnic dance that could best represent
your town, city, or province? Why is it so?
