For the following exercises, determine whether the relation represents a function.

6. {(a, b), (c, d), (a, c)} = NOT A FUNCTION

7. {(a, b), (b, c), (c, c)} = FUNCTION

For the following exercises, determine whether the relation represents y as a function of
x.
8. 5x + 2y = 10
2y = -5x + 10
−5 x +10
y= ; FUNCTION
2

10. x= y2
 √ x= y ; NOT A FUNCTION

14. y= 1 x ; FUNCTION
18. x2 + y2 = 9

y =  √ −x 2+ 9 ; NOT A FUNCTION
26. y3 = x2

y = √3 x 2 ; FUNCTION

For the following exercises, evaluate the function f at the indicated values f(−3), f(2),
f(−a), −f(a), f(a+ h).
27. f(x)= 2x- 5
f(-3) f(2) f(-a) -f(a) f(a+ h)
f(-3)= 2(-3)- 5 f(2)= 2(2)- 5 f(-a)= 2(-a)- 5 -(-f(a)= 2(a)- 5 f(a+h)= 2(a+h)- 5
f(-3)= -6- 5 f(2)= 4-5 f(-a)= -2a- 5 -f(a)= -2a+ 5 f(a+h)= 2a+2h- 5
f(-3)= -11 f(2)= -1

34.  Given the function k(t)=2t−1:

a. Evaluate k (2).

k (2)= 2(2)-1
= 4-1
=3

b. Solve k(t)=7.

7= 2t-1
8= 2t
4=t

38. Given the function f(x)=√ x+ 2

a. Evaluate f(7).

f(x)= √ 7+2
f(x)= √ 9
f(x)= 3

b. Solve f(x)=4.

4= √ x+ 2
2
(4=√ x+ 2)2
16= x+2
14= x

Graphical

For the following exercises, use the vertical line test to determine which graphs show
relations that are functions.

41. NOT A FUNCTION

42. FUNCTION
For the following exercises, evaluate the expressions, given functions f, g, and h:

 f(x)=3x−2
 g(x)=5−x2
 h(x)=−2x2+3x−1

73. 3f (1) − 4g (−2)

= 3(3(1)-2)-4(5-(-2)2)
= 3(1)-4(1)
= 3-4
= -1

Real-World Applications

88.  The amount of garbage, G, produced by a city with a population p is given by G= f

(p), G is measured in tons per week, and p is measured in thousands of people.

a. The town of Tola has a population of 40,000 and produces 13 tons of garbage
each week. Express this information in terms of the function f.

13= f(40,000)

b. Explain the meaning of the statement f(5)= 2

The town of Tola has 5 people that produces 2 tons of garbage per
week.
