CCTV SYSTEM DESIGN DISCUSSION
Introduction:

You may improve security by having a well designed CCTV system. Placing cameras in key areas
of your house or place of business. You stop breaking and entering as well as vandalism. In places with
high crime rates, this is especially crucial. The security system aids in preventing intellectual and property
theft for non-retail business owners. The system design or plan for video cameras is very crucial. CCTV
system design should show the layout for strategically placing video cameras that record and send footage
to either a video recorder or a private network of displays for subsequent viewing.

The CCTV system designed by the group is discussed below. It includes the CCTV system design
considerations, as well as the components of the CCTV design including the cameras, monitors, power
over ethernet, video recorders, and etc. Types of camera mounting are also discussed by the group. To
further provide enough knowledge with the CCTV design system, specifications of the components used
are also provided.

CCTV System Design Considerations:

Considerations of the proponents for system design cover things like lighting, electricity, and
transmission. These elements are crucial to the design and organization of a CCTV system. Camera types
and other components are significant considerations in addition to these parameters. The process of
choosing the CCTV parts is iterative and occurs concurrently with the design phase.

● The purpose of the CCTV system should be determined before installing the cameras to help
determine the placement and number of cameras required.
● Lighting conditions in the areas where cameras will be installed should be assessed to ensure that
the cameras can capture clear images.
● Areas that require coverage, such as entry points, parking lots, stairwells, elevators, and other
high risk areas should be identified to ensure that all blind spots are eliminated.
● The types of cameras required, such as fixed, PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom), or clothes should be
determined based on the purposes of the CCTV system and the area being monitored.
● Camera placement should be determined to provide the best coverage of the area while ensuring
that cameras are placed in a way that does not violate privacy rights.
● Cabling and wiring requirements for the CCTV cameras should be considered, and the cables and
wires should be concealed as much as possible to prevent tampering or damage.
● Power requirements for the CCTV cameras should be determined, and power outlets should be
located close to the cameras to reduce the length of the cables required.
● The CCTV system should be tested before final installation to ensure that all cameras are working
properly.

Components of CCTV Systems

CCTV produces, transmits, displays, and stores video data using directly linked components. The
groups' modest CCTV setup consists of a camera bought from a retail electronics store linked to a video
monitor. Larger systems, on the other hand, are made up of a variety of parts and are managed by trained
security staff.

● Cameras
● Monitors
● Power over Ethernet
● Video Recorder

Cameras
Any CCTV system must include cameras as a necessary component. The group discussed
choosing the best CCTV camera for a certain application. The group also took into account the variables
that may impact the effectiveness of the system. The group is aware that proper camera choice
necessitates in-depth familiarity with the camera, application, supporting architecture, and host
environment.

The cameras below are the cameras used by the group on the CCTV System Design:

Pan-Tilt-Zoom Cameras
Since the PTZ cameras are available in a range of forms and sizes for both indoor and outdoor
applications, the group decided to used this type of CCTV camera because of its ability to be rotated and
tilted to give pan and tilt capabilities, and the lens's focal length can be adjusted to vary the FOV. Also,
the camera provides greater flexibility than fixed cameras for viewing and recording pictures in real time.
PTZ cameras can be controlled manually or in automated scan mode, allowing for the capture of the most
pertinent video.

Bullet Cameras
This type of video surveillance camera known as a "bullet security camera" is used by the group
because of its compactness and fashioned like a rifle bullet shell or lipstick container. Smaller bullet
cameras are often shorter and the diameter of a cigar. They are sometimes called "lipstick cameras."
Another reason why the group used this camera is because of its tri-axis mount, which makes mounting
them to walls or ceilings simple.

Dome Type Cameras

The dome camera is one that is most frequently used for security and surveillance both inside and

the camera's form that’s why the group uses this camera, which makes it difficult for observers to
determine which direction the camera is looking.

Camera Mounting
The selection of camera mounts is examined by the group because it is a necessary step in the
design and installation of a successful CCTV system. The operational system requirements, which are
determined during the design and procurement phases of a CCTV installation project, were also
considered by the group because it directly influences the choice of CCTV mounting hardware.

The methods of CCTV mounting below was used by the group:

Wall Mounts
Similar to the bracket on a shelf, the group employs wall mounts to support the camera. The
reason why the group used this kind of mounting is because it offers a way to change the camera's view or
aim.

Ceiling Mounts
Ceiling mounts are another method used by the group. It was used to suspend the camera or
equipment from a ceiling.

Corner Mounts
In the designed CCTV System, the cameras are also mounted using corner mounts at the right
angle where two walls meet. This type of mounting was used by the group for the optimum FOV, corner
mounts are frequently placed close to the ceiling.

Monitors
Another vital part of the CCTV system design is the monitors. With the use of monitors, a strong
security system may be created by recording and surveying both inside and outdoor locations.

LCD Monitors
There are numerous different sizes, styles, and resolutions of LCD displays. But one of the main
reasons why the group decided to use LCD monitors is that they can analyze CCTV data at a greater
resolution than CRT monitors. Also, they offer a crisper, brighter image. The group compares it to other
types of monitors to weigh its importance and functionality. Compared to CRT displays with comparable
screen sizes, LCD monitors are substantially thinner front to back, taking up less space and producing less
heat. Another thing that the group considered is the number of facilities using the same type of monitor on
their CCTV system. Many monitoring facilities in governmental, commercial, and corporate locations are
employing LCD monitors because they offer more flexible viewing possibilities than banks of CRT
displays.

Power over Ethernet (PoE)

On the CCTV system designed by the group, PoE or power over ethernet was used. One cable is
required for each camera when using the PoE system, which transmits data and power over copper
Ethernet wiring. Since there are no additional power outlets or connections required, PoE can help
simplify installation and provide more flexible camera placement if you have hundreds or thousands of
cameras.

The group uses a 32 port PoE switch with a maximum power of 500 watts. The group decided to
use this type of PoE to simplify the installation since the group installed 148 CCTV cameras. Also, to
provide enough power to each camera. In terms of power, the PoE used has a power of 500 watts. Upon
reading the consideration for choosing the right PoE to use, the power usage of all the cameras installed
must not exceed to the maximum power that the PoE can provide. The group considers the individual
power usage or consumption of each type of camera and computes the overall power usage of all the
cameras installed. The power of all the cameras doesn’t exceed the 500 Watts maximum power that the
PoE provides.

Therefore, the PoE used by the group can be considered as the right PoE for the CCTV System
Design because it can provide enough power to all CCTV cameras and can prevent malfunction because
of power shortage.

Video Recorders
The group is aware that in evidence gathering, recording capacity is crucial. The emergence of
digital video has increased the need for recorders with hard drive storage, even though some systems still
utilize tape. In today's world, traditional analog CCTV systems that record video to video cassette
recorders (VCR) are rare and are quickly being replaced by DVRs and NVRs on IP networks. Although
there are many different types of recorders in use today, this section will concentrate on digital recording
devices, removable media, and certain new technologies.

The video recorder used by the group on the design was discussed below.

Network Video Recorder (NVR)

Since the cameras used by the group are IP Cameras or cameras using internet protocol and
transmitting digital video data over an IP network, the group uses NVR. It is because NVRs can be set up
to record digital video. Another consideration by the group is its capabilities as a mass storage device,
portable storage device, or disk drive. Also, the group compared NVRs to DVRs and found out that DVRs
are not capable of receiving video input through an IP network. Video is encoded and processed at the
camera in an NVR configuration before being broadcast to the NVR for archival or remote viewing.
