2014 Unit E Chapter 1 Vocabulary

The document discusses various physical properties including mass, volume, density, and states of matter. It defines key terms like solid, liquid, and gas as well as processes like evaporation and condensation. Physical properties that can be observed or measured like color, hardness, and ability to conduct heat or electricity are covered.

1.

Physical
properties
•Characteristics of a substance that can
be observed or measured without
changing the substance into something
else
•Color, hardness, taste
•Ability to conduct heat, sound, or
electricity
•Any measurements
2. Matter
•anything that has
mass and takes up
space
•the “stuff” that things
are made of
3. MASS
•the amount of matter in
something
•ALL matter has mass!
•measured in grams (g).
•does not change - no
matter where you go!
4. Weight
•a measure of the
force of gravity on an
object
•measured in newtons
•changes based on
the pull of gravity
5. VOLUME
•amount of space an object takes up
•we will most often measure in milliliters
(mL), but liters (L) is the standard unit
•measure liquids with graduated cylinder

•measure irregular solids (rock, marble)

with graduated cylinder – water
displacement method
•Measure regular solids (cubes, etc.)
with the following formula
–LENGTH X WIDTH X HEIGHT
6. Length
• Length is the measure of
the distance from one
point to another point.

• In the Metric System, the

base unit for length is
meters.
7. Temperature
•The measure of the energy of motion of
the particles in matter

•Temperatures are measured by using a

thermometer.

•Degrees Celsius (metric system)

•Degrees Fahrenheit (US system)

8. density
•The concentration of matter in an
object
•Have to know mass and volume of an
object
•Mass ÷ volume (g/cm3)
•Does NOT change when you move
from one place to another
9. solid
•state of matter
•has a definite shape
•has a definite volume
•particles are very close together
10. liquid
•state of matter
•they are the shape of the container that
holds them
•has NO definite shape
•has a definite volume
•particles are a little farther apart & can
flow
11. gas
•state of matter
•does not have a definite shape
•Does not have a definite volume
•example: when you put air into a tire, it
takes the shape of the tire
•Particles are very far apart and move
quickly
12. evaporation
•occurs when particles escape from a
non-boiling liquid and becomes a gas
•the process by which a liquid changes
into a gas
13. condensation
•occurs when drops of water appear
on the outside of a glass of cold
water on a hot day
•the process by which a gas changes
back into a liquid
14. sublimation
•change in state from a solid to a gas
•dry ice is an example
