Butler Streak Snapped at Creighton

Box Score

OMAHA, Neb. – A second half scoring drought combined with a 27-point performance from BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year Marrisa Janning was too much to overcome for Butler as the Bulldogs lost at Creighton on Sunday afternoon 62-55.

Butler went 9:29 without a field goal in the second half allowing Creighton to erase a three-point halftime deficit and finish the game on a 22-9 scoring run over the final 11 minutes of the contest. A 3-point field goal from Loryn Goodwin broke the scoring drought and Blaire Langlois came up with a clutch 3-point field goal from the corner to get Butler within two points with just over a minute to play, but Janning was too much down the stretch as the guard came up with seven of Creighton's final 11 points to knock off the Bulldogs.

Janning's final drive to the bucket with just 45 seconds remaining pushed the Creighton lead back to four points and free throws would lead the Bluejays to the seven point victory.

Ijeoma Uchendu led Butler in a losing effort with 17 points and eight rebounds. Belle Obert and Langlois were also in double figures with 13 and 12 points respectively. Obert ended the day with a double-double by also pulling down 13 rebounds.

Butler shot 50 percent in the first half, but just 32 percent during the final 20 minutes which led to the defeat. Additional factors that came up big in the final outcome included points in the paint, points off turnovers and second chance points as Creighton dominated each category.

Janning had a terrific opening half to keep Creighton within striking distance at halfime. The junior scored 15 of Creighton's 26 points while also shutting down Loryn Goodwin defensively. Goodwin only took two shots in the opening 20 minutes with Janning shadowing her on nearly every possession.

With Goodwin out of the mix offensively, Butler turned to Ijeoma Uchendu who scored 11 of her 17 points in the first half. Uchendu shot 5-for-8 from the field starting the day with jumpers and ending the half with post moves.

Blaire Langlois hit back-to-back 3-point field goals to stop a surging Bluejay team that got 11-straight points from Janning down the stretch. Joining Janning with a productive first half was post presence Alexis Akin-Otiko. Akin-Otiko scored seven points, but was kept off the offensive glass in part to Belle Obert who grabbed six boards at the break.

While the 'Jays were able to take Goodwin away offensively, Butler had a similar strategy as Sydney Lamberty was also held in check during the first 20 minutes with zero points on 0-of-4 shooting.

Lamberty and Goodwin each ended the game with six points. Akin-Otiko was the only other Bluejay to reach double figures for CU as she ended the game with 14 points.

Butler will return to action with an early tip on Friday as the Bulldogs host DePaul on Feb. 6 at 11:30 a.m.
