Adopted in 1989, the mission of the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete well-being, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. Additionally, the National SAAC reviews, reacts, and comments to the governance structure on legislation, activities and subjects of interest, generates student-athlete voice within the NCAA, suggests potential NCAA legislation, and solicits student-athlete response to proposed legislation. The committee is comprised of one athlete from all member conferences.

The Butler University SAAC, our campus version of the national organization, is comprised of student-athletes from all 20 sports, and is mandated by the NCAA. Acting as the "Voice" of the student-athletes, the SAAC's function is to foster an atmosphere of open communication between the athletes and the athletics administration, develop leaders among the student-athlete population, disseminate information to coaches and teammates, build a family atmosphere by organizing social events and community service outings, identify issues that affect the student-athlete experience on our campus, and assist the Big East Conference and the NCAA with legislative feedback. One member of our campus SAAC doubles as a liaison to the Big East Conference SAAC. As a part of their commitment to the conference committee, this person must sit in on monthly conference calls and attend an in-person meeting, yearly.

Our SAAC is led by a President, Vice President, Secretary (voted in annually) and chairs for the following sub-committees: community service, operations, public relations, and SAAC awards. Each member serves on a sub-committee of their choice and the committee chairs report to the Secretary. The committee meets monthly and welcomes any athlete, administrator, or coach who has a desire to attend.
